The SolidLogic Montevina GS-L10 is a small, passively-cooled system with a
moderate amount of horse power. The mobile Celeron T3100 processor in our sample
is faster than CULV models but more energy efficient than most desktop chips,
and easily cooled by the case. If a Celeron 1.9 GHz doesn't quite cut it for
you, high-end CPU options include the Core 2 Duo T9400 (2.53 GHz) and Core 2
Quad Q9000 (2.00 GHz).
The star of the show is undoubtedly the enclosure and cooling system, a fine
example of a simple but thoughful and effective implementation of heatpipe technology.
The size of the case and exterior heatsinks is more than enough for the hardware
inside. Our only problem with the enclosure is the complete lack of switches,
buttons, and ports at the front of the case. Having to reach behind to turn
the system or plug in a USB device is annoying. The motherboard utilized also
has an odd assortment of connectors with only 4 USB ports, but two RJ45 and
Our biggest complaint is reserved for the Emphase Industrial SSD included in
our sample. It noticeably and frequently paused between commands ruining what
was otherwise a generally positive experience. Unfortunately Logic Supply currently
does not offer any popular consumer SSDs, only Emphase Industrial and Transcend
drives, and an 80GB Seagate Extreme Environment hard drive (with a higher operating
temperature tolerance to survive the fully encapsulated case).
Lastly, there is price to consider the retail cost of our review unit
is a steep US$1020. If you drop the SSD to use your own, the price comes down
to $780. Given its dimensions and performance, it's one of the better deals
out there for a silent compact PC. Most general PC users may still find the
price hard to stomach. But for those with severe noise allergies or for specialized
applications where silence, dust-resistance, zero maintenance or no airflow
to disturb the environment are valued, the price can be easily justified. The
