Technically the hard drive is a form of permanent storage, that is to say the data it stores is retained after the power is cut. However in a physical sense they are anything but, especially now that they have such high capacities and low prices. Hard drives get upgraded, moved, passed around, and are discarded without much fanfare when they outlive their usefulness. For those who service computers and often work with hard drives in particular, getting access to the data stored inside without having to connect the drive inside a PC can save a lot of time.

The TransImp USB 3.0 adapter and dock boxes.

MUKii Technology is a Taiwanese company with a small catalogue consisting most notably of a line of hard drive adapters, caddies, docks, and enclosures. These types are devices are nothing new, but USB 3.0 supported models have only started showing up recently. As we discovered when we reviewed the Seagate GoFlex 1.5TB external hard drive, USB 3.0 offers a substantial speed bump over USB 2.0. We'll be looking at the MUKii TransImp TIP-Q120U3SI, a SATA/IDE to USB 3.0 adapter, and TIP-D1803U3-WH, a SATA to USB 3.0 hard drive dock. The choice of the word "imp" is rather interesting; hopefully it is meant to describe only the size of their products. Imps traditionally have been depicted as troublesome, evil creatures.

The IDE/SATA to USB 3.0 adapter is technically two separate devices, an adapter and an AC power adapter for desktop drives as USB 3.0 doesn't deliver enough juice to spin-up 3.5" drives. Also included are a short SATA cable and molex to SATA power adapter, and a two-pronged USB 3.0 cable. The dock is anything but impish, rather large compared to similar devices. It's a single drive model only and doesn't support alternative interfaces like eSATA or FireWire. Both units have very long cables so accessibility won't be an issue.
