File Transfer Suite:
- Small Files:
1,278 small HTML, JPEG, and MP3 files totaling 839MB.
- Large Files: Four large AVI files totaling 4194MB.
- Huge File: One MKV file, 3799MB in size (not really "huge" but generates similar MB/s results as single 10GB+ sized files)
Before we get the results we should note some problems that cropped up during testing. When a drive was connected using either the adapter or dock, one of our main testing tools, HD Tune, refused to load. Its GUI would only show itself once the drive was disconnected.

On a more serious note, the TransImp adapter did not play well with the NEC USB 3.0 controller on the Asus P6X58D Premium board we had been using up to this point for testing USB 3.0 devices. When copying large files from a drive connected via the adapter to an internal one, the adapter would simply drop out with Windows no longer detecting it. As a result we had to test the adapter using a Gigabyte H55N-USB3 which has a Renasa USB 3.0 controller. The dock did not suffer from this issue.
File Transfer Performance
To gauge the performance of the TransImp adapter, we conducted a series of file transfers between a pair of 600GB VelociRaptors, arguably the fastest hard drives currently in production. We compared the results using USB 3.0, USB 2.0, and connected internally to a SATA 3Gbps interface. Very similar results were generated using the TransImp dock so they were omitted.
Testing performed during our Seagate GoFlex review revealed that a 5400 RPM notebook drive using USB 3.0 operated at almost full speed (using Seagate's adapter at least). The JMicron controller used by MUKii paired with a VelociRaptor paints a different story. While read speeds were three to four times faster than USB 2.0, USB 3.0 seemed to bottleneck the drive somewhat. The target drive on USB 3.0 only managed to attain 83% of the speed it accomplished when connected internally.
Write speeds averaged a little bit less, 78% of what SATA2 delivers.

HD Tach confirms a slight bottleneck of the VelociRaptor. Sequential reads hover around the 100 MB/s level using the MUKii adapter; connected via SATA, the speed only dips below 100 MB/s at the slower portion of the track near the end.
