Most SPCR readers have probably not heard of
Ultra Products. This would not come as a great surprise, since
they're a relatively new company that seems to focus mainly on accessories and
case modding products, and has no history in the quiet component or system market.
However, they do have several products that may be of interest, like the subject of this review, the
Ultra X-Connect 500W power supply.
The packaging is quite a lot bigger than usual.

It's a big box...

...that holds all this.
Included in the box are the Ultra X-Connect PSU, cables and
a good manual. The manual is a nice touch; it's not uncommon for PSUs
to have no documentation whatsoever. It also gives us the opportunity to check
out the manufacturer claims regarding their product:

| FEATURE & BRIEF |
COMMENT |
|
ATX12V V1.2 Intel
PSU Guide compliance
|
The latest standard is
V2.0, the one prior is V1.3; this could be better. |
|
Modular Cable Connection System
|
It shares this unique
feature with the Antec NeoPower, which it preceded. |
| High-Gloss Mirror Finish |
Looks nice. |
|
UV Reactive Shielded Cables
|
Could be nice with a case window and UV lighting. |
| Dual 80mm Fans |
OK, not necessarily good or bad. |
Low Acoustic Noise
|
One of the things we always verify. |
Protection against
Short-Circuit, Over-current,
Over-temperature
|
Considerably less complete protection than many other PSUs. |
|
Safety / EMI Approvals: IEC, FCC-B, UL, CSA, EN certification
|
Generally, the more the
better.

It's interesting to note the very high current available on the +12V line. It's probably close to the thermal rated limits of the 12V cables and connectors. As is usual, the combined max output power is substantially less than the simple sum of the individual line maximums.
