We like it when companies have a sense of humor about their products. That's
a good thing for nMedia, since their Icetank heatsink is named almost as ridiculously
as Scythe's Fishcake (Kamaboko). The joke extends farther than just the name
too; the heatsink bears a resemblance to a tanker truck. The question
is whether the heatsink is as frivolous as its name or a serious
contender.
nMedia specializes in making components for home
theater systems, which means that low noise is important. They are best known
for their cases, although they have recently begun to sell power supplies and
heatsinks as well.
The Icetank is meant to fit the requirements of the home theater PC. That means
that low noise and small stature are as important as good cooling. nMedia
has also made an effort to ease installation by designing a completely toolless
mounting system. Given that the Icetank is compatible with every CPU socket
from the old Intel 478 to AMD's brand new AM2, that's an impressive feat.
Picture a semi tractor hidden in the front...
A fan controller and the usual bits of hardware are included, but no instruction
manual.
