Re: Pondering building all-in-one workstation+server
Hmm, given the following wishlist, what kind of wattage would you expect this system to use at idle? http://amzn.com/w/349XDEBD0LYNJ I seem to recall my current microserver idling at around 40 watts, so as long as this won't be excessively much higher, it seems like a sane change. I'd also be adding...

Pondering building all-in-one workstation+server
I'm ready to upgrade my hardware, but I'm not certain which route I want to take. My current systems are an HP EliteBook 8530w (fan always running due to damaged heatpipe) and an HP Microserver N40L (running from PicoPSU, with rear fan reversed and filtered). Possible plans I'm considering: Replace ...

Re: HP MicroServer
I only managed to brick mine by messing up the batch file, and then apparently mistyping the flash command manually. When you get it right (as the batch file does), you'll see only a very small number of blocks actually marked 'p' for 'programmed' -- everything else is unchanged. There are also a bu...

Re: HP MicroServer
Interesting... I had to get my N36L motherboard warranty-replaced (bricked BIOS), and the part I received was announced as a substitution: the N40L motherboard. I don't remember what "lspci -nn" showed before, but it seems to be essentially the same chipset. Can somebody can tell me what's different...

Re: HP MicroServer
Oh yeah, I had also asked about the PSU in the other Microserver thread, and they suggested that there must be something wrong with it. Not long after that, I had HP replace the PSU, and now it's merely annoying instead of "oh god my ears". I'd be curious to see a comparison, with your equipment, be...

Re: HP's new Neo (12W TDP) based microserver (with HW decodi
Thanks for the tips about how that noise must be something wrong. I contacted HP, and they sent me a new PSU. I've installed it, and it's much much quieter. No tone except at boot time (and presumably times of high load) -- and even then, it's not earsplitting. (Oh, and the new PSU somehow smells li...

Re: HP's new Neo (12W TDP) based microserver (with HW decodi
I know humans can't hear the 20kHz tone, but dogs can -- and it drives them crazy. I do have very sensitive ears, so the 1.8KHz tone is quite noticeable. There's another thread where they said the power supply part number has changed since you got your review sample. It'd be helpful if you could get...

Re: HP MicroServer
I just got mine about two weeks ago, and the power supply fan is really loud -- and sometimes, it's actually painful. http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=544669#p544669 I made a recording (attached to post above) -- if you stick it in Audacity and do Analyze -> Plot Spectrum, you ge...

Re: HP's new Neo (12W TDP) based microserver (with HW decodi
Anyone else find that the power supply fan is like 3-5 times as loud as everything else in the system? In fact, right now it's making a really irritating high-pitched tone. It's giving me a headache, and freaking out my dogs. I had to move them out of my room and close the door -- one of them was te...

Well, how thick is the thermal pad? If it's not negligible, I'd suggest finding a good thermal pad to replace it; otherwise, you'll have to do what I did with my notebook: many alternating layers of thermal paste and thick aluminum foil. In my case, Gateway had left a visible gap between the northbr...

http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=33840399 I actually found a way to bypass Abit's login redirect, and posted pics. Edit: I did this by disabling Javascript and Redirects in Firefox, with the extension Tab Mix Plus Also, Asus's RD580 board has been discovered as well, but they took the pi...

Take a look at the Abit AT8 (and soon the AT8 32X)
It has 6 fan connectors (wow, that's excessive), and I believe most, if not all, are speed controllable by BIOS.

ATITray will also do ingame OSD, with FPS, memory use, gpu temp, and plugins to pull data from speedfan.
http://www.guru3d.com/article/atitraytools/189/
Plus there's a lot more it can do, like increasing gpu speed (and fan speed, if supported) in 3d and decreasing in 2d automatically.

I'd actually prefer it to NOT be clear. I want to put an aluminum ripply mesh filter in front of it. I'm currently using the stock blue from my Aspire X-Dreamer II, with a 3-pin soldered on. The shape of the hole is mostly what makes it whistle, since I flipped the window upside down. Originally the...

Would it be possible to adapt the p4 bracket to Socket A by drilling some holes? I could partly suspend the heatsink from my case with guy wires. Look at this template: http://www.evilspork.net/es/pics/random%20stuffs/template.jpg Edit: Possibly alter this adapter: http://www.overclockers.com/articl...

Check out the Aerocool VM-101 -- it looks to be more easily reversible than the Zalman. It also may be possible (don't quote me on this) to bend the heatpipes so the heatsink does not block the PCI slots. have the ZM80D, and I like it, but upside-down will likely not work well with it. Here's an ide...
