One notable difference is the S1283V "Dark Knight" does not come with the spoiler to aim airflow toward rear CPU power supply components. I don't know that the spoiler on the S1283 did much though. The finish is sort of a black chrome look. I don't care one way or the other. The crossbow mount works...

Xigmatek S1283V vs. S1283
Has anyone tried the S1283V? It appears to be the S1283 plus the "crossbow" mount. The copper heat pipes appear to be plated silver, and the fan might be different.
It is cheaper than the 1283 + separate crossbow.

I'm not sure how you enable AAM in the BIOS, but AAM settings are stored on the drive itself, so if you can set them from the other machine the settings should stick. If this is an Intel Mac, I wonder if you can boot something like an Ubuntu Live CD and change AAM on the drive using "sudo hdparm -M ...

My first WD10EACS drive lasted 48h in a TiVo. Before installation in the TiVo, I ran the full set of WD diagnostic tests and it passed them all. After my TiVo started locking up, I pulled the GP drive and it failed the quick SMART test right away. (The drive temp in the TiVo was 42C, pretty much the...

got a bad one
I've built about a dozen machines at the office using the Ninja Mini, and I just ran into a bad sample. Visually, it looks fine. Running 4 instances of mprime (Linux) on a QX6700 coretemp rises to 100C on all 4 cores and then thermal throttling kicks in as evidenced by LED on B975X2 motherboard. I r...

Pauli, I'm not sure. The room's ambient is about 22C, but the DirecTivo is in a (usually open) entertainment center, stacked on top of some other components including the A/V receiver. About 2in above the DirecTivo is a shelf supporting the TV. Thus, it is likely considerably warmer in there. I'll s...

Are there suitably conductive paints? This whole shielding has me wondering. I have a SLK3000B, all steel. I am not talking about putting tape behind the door but behind the bezel, between the optical drives and the steel case. Where are you getting dust buildup? Is it behind the bezel between an optical drive and the case near the clips? If so, just tape around the optical drive/case junction to seal it off. I did this with electrical tape, although anything should work. If the Sonata is like my 3000B, that tape will not ...

They did do go through the probe three times. While that doesn't help the %error of the measurement, it does help the floor. Effectively, they can measure down to 0.8A through the 12V, which is down to about 10W. As to the %error, that would likely be the same across all the CPUs, so comparisons wou...

I've always wondered if doing something like this would give the hard drive a bigger "sounding board" to produce noise. I realize it is soft mounted with respect to the case, but all that aluminum could vibrate along with the drive. Maybe this is such a secondary effect it is not worth worrying about?

All I meant is it is probably $100 minimum for an electrician/plumber/etc to come to your house. In our town, you can do your own electrical wiring in your own home if you get a permit ($15) and have it inspected by the town's electrical inspector (covered by the permit fee I believe). Other towns l...

It's going to require a powerful step up transformer of 700VA or more (depending on what SPCR intend to review, of course). I can't say for the US, but I seem to remember they were about £80+ over here. Huh? We have 230V circuits here in the US (presumably Canada too) in homes as well. They are use...
