Is the fan in the middle? Should be 120mm. 1800rpm is definately not silent. Especially not when blowing/sucking on those fins (turbulence). Guess it's ok underrpmed though.

Well, overheating is an issue. But using speedfan and a slow fan (quieter than the hd) should solve that problem if the enclosure transmits the heat from the HD to the enclosure itself.

The HD is a WD3000JD. Only six months old. I'm pretty sure it's FDB. It sounds almost like a slow fan so idle "whine" may be an exaggeration. However, I want it quiter.
