Cards in the $150 to $200 range
Just like the subject says I'm in the market for a card in the $150 to $200 range. I'm looking to do some gaming, single monitor at 1900x1020. Nothing too cutting edge. I'm open to any suggestions but my research keeps bringing me back to an AMD 7770. It's hard to ignore 80W TDP, less heat, easier t...

comparing CPU on a per core basis?
Hello all, I'm currently considering building a new rig and have been looking at different CPU's and their benchmarks. However, I haven't been able to find benchmarks that allow me to compare the performance of individual CPU cores in isolation. Basically I want to know how much muscle each core has...

If you suspect a RAM issue, 24 hours of memtest86 might be a good idea. Boots from a floppy and runs a number of different bit patterns to check the RAM.

Thoughts on my VF900
I just received and installed a VF900 on my ATI built X800 XT PE. :D So far, I've very happy with the cooler. Some random thoughts on it: 1- expensive... :( 2- Fantastic finish on the heatsink base. It's the best I've seen, by far. Polished to a mirror. 3- At max 12v, it makes less noise than the st...

I've almost convinced myself to get the vf700 and I'm wondering the same thing. Does anybody know the fan rating for the vf700? Here's my guess. My X800 XT has a 70mm fan that probably tops out near 4000 rpm (I couldn't find any numbers so I'm guessing based on the sound it makes). The vf700 has an ...

snowman59 The HD is less than 6 months old so it's definitely on warrenty. I'd rather not RMA if I don't have to. It's a real pain to go through that proccess. illimiter Yup. I did a full scan using the WD diag tools and I did a level 4 spinrite6 scan. Both tools report that the drive is fine and e...

HD crash, poor cooling root cause?
I had a HD crash a few days ago during a heavy session of gaming and I'm trying to find the root cause of the problem. I've run a handfull of HD diagnostic software and they all tell me the HD is ok physically. It seems the partition on my drive got nuked. Totally corrupted. :( I've been digging thr...

Hello indotoonster, It sound like your problem was probably due to your el-chepo fan controller giving up the ghost or your soldering job causing a short. My guess is the soldering job. I don't necessarily mean that you did a bad job applying the solder but you might have bent some of the components...

Concering item 1. I built a system 4 months ago with an ASUS-AV8 mobo and my old 9800 PRO built by ATI. The VIA chipset and ATI did not like each other. I kept getting random reboots and crashes. They occured more often during gaming. I returned the ASUS and replaced with an nForce based MSI board. ...

PS, power draw from crystals/oscillators and clock distribution is not very significant. The majority of power losses in digital circuits are a combination of leakage current and switching power. Leakage power is the power disipated while the circuit does nothing and switching power is the power nee...

I had to jump in on this one. First, my credentials: I design CPU's for a living and I've designed asynchronous (clockless) circuits of the type you describe. The basic reason you don't see asynchronous circuits is that clock based circuits are easier, faster and cheaper to design and manufacture. T...

Woo hoo! Finally, somebody who can confirm that the Neo2 Platinum will undervolt. Thanks Straker! :D As for undervolting the ASUS mobo, this is where I got my info: http://www.silentpcreview.com/article69-page1.html But, dont believe every thing you read on the web. Who knows if you can trust these ...

eander315: I've searched the MSI website for voltage range info but have come up empty handed. All the Neo2 reviews that I've read only talk about overvolting and overclocking. Nothing about undervolting or voltage ranges for the CPU. If you could check the BIOS voltage range for me, that would be g...

MSI Neo2 Platinum or ASUS A8V Deluxe?
I'm having a hard time deciding if I should get the MSI Neo2 Platinum or ASUS A8V Deluxe. The ASUS uses the VIA chipset and the MSI uses the NF3. I haven't been able to confirm that the MSI Neo2 will undervolt or even determine the voltage range, grrr. Which would you choose and why? Thanks, Megaman

I wondered the same thing and decided to go with the 160 SATA Spinpoints instead. They suit me just fine. Perhaps I'll add a 10k drive for OS and apps when they become quieter and easier to cool. That's my alternate configuration. Use a Raptor for OS/Apps and a Spinpoint for data. Maybe I'll start ...
