I'm not sure if I'm on the same lines as the rest of you, but I've got a high pitched squeel coming from my Dell Latitiude E6400 notebook. I've not fully researched the problem yet, but around a month ago, I purchased a SSD, and for a couple of weeks, rejoiced in laptop silence. As we all know, it c...

I use the hammer method - often destroy the pcb, and then drive an old screwdriver through the case. I don't get them any more, but several years ago I had a few drives with glass platters, and these were really satisfying - bash them with the hammer and the glass disitegrated - gave a lovely broken...

I just purchased a D630 - it's both good & bad! Bulid quality is pretty good, and the magnesium chassis is quite a work of art. However, being metal, it tends to act as one big heatsink, which means that the temperature of the case gets very high (measured a maximum of 110 degrees F), which to my mi...

I've got a Dell Ultrasharp 2007WFP at home, and there is an irritating buzz which is dependent upon the brightness of the background - the more white there is, the louder the buzz. (Ironically, this is the same problem that I have with my Philips TV, but that's another story ...). I'm using two of t...

I've got 3 Ninjas - a type A & a type B, on almost identical machines, and the type a runs (say) 10 degrees lower. I just installed a second type B on a new machine today - it's very hard to tell if it's all clipped down properly, but you have to say that the clips are just not up to the job. Anyway...

Funnily enough my latest PC (with an ATX PSU of course) switches on as soon as I turn the power strip on - I don't really want it to, but then again, I am not too bothered, since if I turn the power strip on, the next thing that I always do is turn the PC on - so it saves me around 10 seconds every ...

As far as I recall, the 7300GS offers the lowest consumption for a Nvidia card.

It's definitely just air, not vibration; the PSU is in the bottom of my Lian-li case, but there is around 15mm under the PSU, and the case is drilled in a sort of honeycomb pattern underneath, so that the airflw should not be restricted. As a matter of interest, just before putting it all together, ...

Thanks for that thought Kater - I am quite tempted to do a fan swap, however, I thought that the generally held view was that you should not use a sleeve bearing fan in a PSU, and the ball bearing fans seem to be louder. In the meantime, I have swapped out my Corsair for my old passive PSU, and all ...

No, it would be unrealistic to expect silence from 2 inches, but I would hope that it would be at a metre. As you can see, I have purchased the top 2 SPCR rated models (and quite a lot of others over the past 5(ish) years), so perhaps I have a low ambient noise level. But I don't think it's that low...

Yes, I am certain the main source of the noise is the PSU (I've tried it with the other fans stopped). Not sure if it's vibration of just pure air 'whoosh' - possibly a bit of each - I'll have a listen tonight. Rerarding the PSU - I have tried both the Seasonic S12 energy + and the Corsair, which ar...

I think that the greatest source of noise in my system is my Corsair 520 PSU. It's pretty quiet outside the case, but when installed, it sounds far too loud for my liking. It is not a case of the PSU ramping up, but is (I assume) the vibrations getting transferred to the case and/or just more airflo...

I've recently put a new machine together with one of these cards, and am now trying to get it all as quiet as possible. Mostly, I'm pretty happy, and when I switch on it's almost silent, but I do have a problem with my Seasonic S12 energy + ramping up as time goes by, but that's another story. I fou...

I think the V1000 is fine for a quiet PC. Loads of folk knock aluminum cases and say that they vibrate too much, but if you soft mount the drive, and slow down the fans, then where is the vibration coming going to come from? An earlier poster suggested the case with the solid front door - I tried on...

I think it's a human trait - a sort of self-destruct mechanism. I find that the more time and the more money that I spend trying to achieve a silent computer, the more obsessed I become with the slightest amount of noise. The ridiculous thing is that most of the time, the background noise (eg centra...

Sorry if I seem to be relying negatively, but that's what I've already done. I did a complete re-install of XP on a newly formatted (different disk). I posted few comments about this in this section on 8 May, and since then my views have not changed. TD22057 Yes, I did try the attenuators, but it didn't help. There may have been a small reduction in the pulsing noise, but it was still there, and overall, there was excessive noise for the amount of fan movement. I suppose that if one thinks about what PWM is actually doing, then the noise is not ...

T-Balancer mNG (or miniNG)
I've been using a T-Balancer XL for a couple of months now, and whilst the software takes a bit of getting used to, I rate this as a brilliant product - highly customisable - can make your fans do almost anything you want. The only drawback is that it uses PWM, and I don't know if it's just my sensi...
