Re: Ivy Bridge & HTPC
Sorry, I can't answer your question, but I have been actively seeking the answer ever since Ivy Bridge motherboards were released. As far as I know, the answer is that there has been no published testing that demonstrates any improvement over the position with Sandy Bridge platform. When Anandtech t...

SS-401HT
I just received a Seasonic SS-401HT from Koolnquiet in the UK for £65 (don't remember shipping charge so probably not unreasonable within UK). The packaging was excellent (thick bubble wrap). I spoke to a guy there called Paul Haussauer, who was very helpful, although unable to cast much light on Se...

VF700 orientation
Good news from Zalman. I had already gone ahead anyway and I can't see why there would be problems. The heatsink seems to cover the core quite nicely. My only issue was that I forgot to bring any isopropyl alcohol to where I was doing the build so I left the Leadtek thermal paste on the core and RAM...

Fitting VF700 an 6800GT with Swiftech MCX159
I'm about to grapple with a new build of an nforce4 system. I have a Leadtek 6800GT, a Zalman VF700-Cu, an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe and a Swiftech MCX159. In another forum, someone with the same parts has posted that he installed a VF700 using the opposite mounting holes to those suggested by Zalman, whi...

Case quality, replacing EMI covers, and rear fan mounting
Just received an SLK3000B. When unpacked, I discovered one of the plastic latches for the front bezel was broken off. In general, the whole front bezel is extremely flimsy feels very cheap. However, this doesn't surprise me as I also own an SLK3700BQE. Anyway, I am building this for a friend and he ...

SP2014N
I just received two SP2014Ns from Germany and they both have Nidec motors. System is not yet fully-built so I have not tested them yet.

SP2014n
You can order the SP2014N from Germany. Komplett in the UK are stating that they expect 100 drives on April 13th but say this is "unconfirmed". I just received two of these drives from Germany and they have Nidec motors.

Cluster size for Photoshop Scratch Disk
So what about a 10GB partition designated for a Photoshop scratch disk? Any ideas on optimum cluster size? I imagine (but don't know) that Photoshop might create just a few really big files on its Scratch Disk.

Athlon64 overclocking Part 2
(c) Overclocking results with the Athlon64 are somewhat influenced by the fact that, at a given processor speed, there are only a finite number of discrete values that you can set for your true memory frequency. What values are available is dependent on the CPU multiplier that you are using. Now, th...

Athlon64 overclocking part 1
[edited] This now leads me with basically three choices for el cheapo RAM: (a) 2 x Crucial PC3200 DDR-DIMM 512MB CL3 5ns Unbuffered, Non-parity, 2.5V, 64MB x 64. Slightly more expensive. (b) I am now seriously considering the DFI LanParty Ultra-D because of the review on Anandtech and the superb mo...

Swiftech hacking
Great, thanks for the info. I think I'll put he VF700 onto the 6800GT first. Then I'll remove the stock chipset cooler and seat the 6800GT in the motherboard. Then I'll remove the Swiftech's fan and try to line it up under the VGA card without trying to mount it or anything. This should tell me how ...

Swiftech hacking
Christian, I have ordered an Asus A8N-E and a Swiftech chipset cooler but they won't arrive for a few days. I would love to know how easy it is to hack up the pins on the Swiftech. What tool did you use? Also, how did you determine how much to remove from the Swiftech in advance of installing it on ...

Three drives
Three drives does sound optimum but I think we will stick to two for now. Maybe if/when a third drive is eventually added we can rejig things a little, although I think having two disks not used for user data (other than backup) will likely be a step too far for us. Actually, maybe the best thing wo...

Scratch disk size
OK, I have done some more googling. It seems that, as Photoshop can use multiple scratch disks, the thing to do is to set aside a dedicated partition that is large enough for most anticipated usage. Then one can allocate an additional "Scratch Disk" to use a shared partition in case of unexpected ov...

Scratch disk size
A very timely thread... I am building a computer for a friend whio is a keen amateur photographer. He also likes to game. Anyway, so far we have ordered two 200GB disks (Samsungs) and I am thinking about the partitioning scheme. From reading this thread, I have come up with this outline scheme: Disk...

Serillel - any gotchas?
I have ordered two of the new Samsung 200GB drives and had to settle for IDE because the SATA version doesn't seem to be available yet in Europe. As it is, I am in the UK but had to order from Germany to get the drives. Anyhow, I've realised that I'm going to end up with four IDE devices, the other ...

SS-401HT
I am looking for a quiet ATX12V v.2.0 PSU for a new nforce4, non-SLI build. I am in the UK. After extensive reading on this site, I am thinking of buying an SS-401HT because, although noone seems to know about the internals of this PSU, I believe there is a good chance it may be the same as other Se...
