Inspiron 9400 / E1705 Report
I am currently studying an inspiron 9400/e1705 (T7400, 7900GS). Looking decent so far! If I I force settings down, the CPU "struggles" to reach 60 degrees on idle. The GPU fan on the Nvidia 7900GS seems to be dead quiet on low (noticeableably quieter than the cpu fan). It looks like we have a winner...

Hi Cloneman, No, I haven't heard any unusual noises. I agree, it's stable & seems to be a decent board. Did your's come w/ 'Warpspeed' , 'Winflash' or 'ITE's Smart Gaurdian'? I know the fun way to over-clock is to do it manually but 'Warpspeed' seems to be a sweet piece of software. I'm going to pu...

Good choice. I think TT (or was it thermalright?) have a heatpipe-based one as well which is interesting.I replaced the stock north bridge hs with this zalman nbf47 and use a quiet 80mm Panaflo to move air across it.

why does a printer need to use power, however little it may be, when it's off? this applies to PC's too, you'd be surprised how much they use when OFF (note not in standby or S3, but off). Mine uses 12W! Yeah I know. There's also the fact that all power bricks and wall warts use some power if they a...

My old (socket A, a7pro kt133) Asus board's bios used to crash every time I tried to do just about anything. Surprisingly, even after a bios reset, the problem persisted. In the end I had to re-flash it, which worked like a charm... so maybe try that. Now that I have you on the line, does yours make...

Thanks for the link. I've already contacted HP Support. They first suggested replacing the power adapter, but after some searching I found a post by another user on cnet forums that had exactly the same issue (he even checked other models in store to confirm his claims), so it's a fairly strong bet ...

I think the gallery should take exception to this - I like seeing huge pictures and intimate details of some of these systems. Depends on the picture, really, but I do agree that anything over 100k in size is probably excessive unless multiple components are featured (e.g. a motherboard shot) Genera...

I'm in Montreal as well. I usually don't bother looking for silent components locally because it will end up being more expensive than NCIX. The hub (or "Quebec Micro" if you are french) has a pretty good listing of computer stores in Montreal, I suppose you could try calling all of them. IMHO thoug...

Fanless laptops are nice, real nice - but in my opinion a more practical solution would be a laptop that can run with the fan off under light to medium usage, then kick in if performance is needed. Trouble is, from what I've seen, most laptops have fans that kick in much too early, and are a little ...

Laptops are rarely silent by design. Not enough space for effective cooling. However, you can run them silent by undervolting with 3rd party software like NHC or RMClock. I've been using RMClock since 2 years or so with very satisfying results. The fan never runs on my laptop. CPU temp is around 40...

I would think vista on 512MB of ram would be painful - so definitely do that. I don't think that will affect your temps much though. A core duo supporting speedstep would probably help - but chances are you still want to do some sort of fan mod. I had a dell inspiron 6400, it was kind of sad because...

Yes, removing that fan would raise my cpu temp, but that's are not a concern.
I'm thinking of just putting the zen (at least partially) outside the case like Bluefront suggested - I would need an extension cable for the motherboard connectors though... do they even make extensions for P4 connectors?

Depends on the side I put my finger on. The area near where the cables come out is _scorching_ after some gaming ( I can't leave my finger on for more than 3-4 secs. The top is also very hot. The sides and bottom are ok, but then again, those are probably just farther from the heat sources... I adde...

thanks for the reply. I wasn't planning on Daisy chaining 6 splitters, it was just to stress my point. I was referring to my Fortron Zen 300W fanless. a n00b question about rails in a PSU
A PSU has multiple molex connectors - lets say it has 3 "wires" each with 2 molex's allowing for 6 devices (HDD/CD/Fans). Does each "wire" have it's own circuitry, or is it the same thing if I hook up all 6 hard drives on the same connector (using multiple molex Y-splitters).

Time to help the fanless Zen?
I just got a Fortron Zen Fanless 300W for my system... and lo an behold I get a free 9800 Pro from a friend. Of course this drastically changes my power draw (previous card a GF4 MX440) Time to consider helping the fanless PSU with a fan, or moving it outside the case? The top seems quite warm, I wo...

the G1P is difficult to get anywhere right now. It's backordered on 95% of the Canadian retailers here and it's sold out on bestbuy US.
If you do end up getting one, let us know how quiet it is.

I don't know if I would put it inside a static bag while running. The static bag is slightly conductive (on the order of 1 Mega Ohm) so it could cause some funkiness if it was touching the circuit board side of the drive. I'm putting the foam in a reversed static bag, not the hard drive... or does ...

Well the topic title pretty much says it all. Seems to come from the card reader. Buzzing is lower when the printer is off, but is still present. Not mind-blowing, but its there. Seems to come from near the card reader. At least its a network printer, so you have to option of putting it further away...

Some people in the Asus forums have had success with a combination of...
