I am going to pull apart my iBook and fix this god damn clunking noise by sticking the drive in my PC and running the dell update, but before I do, I wanted to find out if anyone here had used the new Dell FW update? There's one dated 11th of May 2005 And one dated 29th of August 2005 The second (ne...

Personally, I would prefer to be able to run both systems simultaneously as from personal experience many moons ago I found dual booting to be a serious drag. I keep my desktop system on standby so I’m used to almost immediate access. Is it possible to run Windows as a virtual machine under OSX suc...

The mac minis are very quiet too, but the fans arc up under load, as one would expect. This is all 'heresay' from someone I know who has one, since I've never used one for an extended period of time. Having owned a PC and a mac for the last 6 months, I can say that in my experience, you get very sic...

What exactly was the "error" that you couldn't ignore? Oops, (raises white flag), it turns out to have been MY ERROR; I completely missed the context of your original post. I apologise for coming on so heavy, I was out of order; even if my initial understanding had been correct, my response was sti...

An error is an error; are we supposed to just ignore errors that involve Mac postings, in case we trigger latent paranoia in the sensitive little Mac user? I picked up on a price comparison because I thought it was absurd and it would have been just as absurd if it had been between an AMD versus In...

I'd love a mac. But price would be a sticking point for me. In Australian Dollars 20" imac, 2 gig ram, 500 gig hd = $3,568.99 My current x2 3800, same specs, w/dell 2405 screen, didn't cost nearly as much. kogi Obviously some people are still wondering why I posted my 'comparison'. Now those two have the same amount of RAM and HD space. Obviously the PC has a 24" monitor, not a 20" one. There's many other differences, but my point is that there isn't a HUGE discrepancy between macs and PCs. This seems like a really desperate attempt to create a level playing field by dynamiti...

Intel iMac - Core Duo

Has anyone else pondered over the fact that the new Intel iMac has a laptop CPU in it, that has a thermal envelope of 27Watts? From all reports, the last G5 iSight model was quiet except for the hard drive. You would have to assume that this model will be even quieter, with a CPU that uses only 27 W...

Home file server/web server advice

Hi there. I'm planning on setting up a home file server/seb server. My specs are: Gigabit ethernet Low power Lots of room for hard disk suspension (I'll probably end up with a few 300GB HDDs in there down the track) Quiet (d'uh) Low cost (:)) I'll be sticking ubuntu on there, and possibly eventually...

Hey ejoy, what ambient room temps do you normally have? My mum has a 1.33Ghz 12" PB, and the only idle noise is the HDD - it's not the quietest HDD in the world, but it's not loud by any means. My 1.33Ghz 12" iBook is much quieter - probably due to the slower CPU, slower bus (and RAM), and slower GP...

Dude.... have you ever tried using a laptop on a desk without an external monitor and keyboard/mouse for any period of time? There's a damn good reason that people buy a good LCD and keyboard to connect to their laptop while they're at their desk - it's called ergonomics. A laptop's LCD won't compar...

Your point about the idle state of the drive as being predominant is a very good one. I really had not thought about that, actually. Of course, in comparing those numbers, the differences are even less. This may indicate that it is not worth it after all... Idle heat was what was the most different...

I have a 12" iBook 1.33Ghz which came with a Toshiba 4200rpm drive. I wanted better HD performance so I bought a Hitachi 7200rpm drive. Big mistake, the Hitachi 7200 is an absolute cooker. Well I'd love to send it back.... but if you know how hard it is to replace the HDD in a 12" iBook then you probably wouldn't have suggested it :o

Also, it's just such a PITA not having my laptop in action for a week or however long it'd take WD to send me new one.

Just thought I'd add a recommendation for the 80gb WD Scorpios... I have one sealed in bubble tape in my Asus Pundit-R which is silent. I also just put one in my 1.33GHz iBook. The seek noise on these Scorpios is very low, and the whirring sound is low enough that I can only hear it in the iBook at ...

Hmmm... I've got a Pundit-R (Different to an old Pundit?) and my PSU has a 80x15mm fan... I don't know how similar the old Pundits are to the 'R's, but with my 'R', I swapped in a 80x15mm Evercool EC8015M12CA in the PSU (and hardwired it to 5V). I also pulled off the CPU fan/duct thingy and put a Si...

Mobile Pentium 4 in desktop mobo?

Hi there, I recently bought a Pundit-R, and (unwisely) thought that a Celeron D would be a low power CPU, and cooling would not be too much of an issue..... any way, a few fan replacements later, and I want to replace the Celeron with a Northwood Pentium. From what I've read, even a 3.2G Northwood w...

Albatron PCI FX5700LEIP for my new Pundit-R

Hi all, I've recently bought a Pundit-R with a Celeron D 2.4, 1GB RAM, 2.5" Hitachi 5400RPM 80GB HD. It runs nice and quiet at the moment using speedfan for the CPU fan, and a homemade 'diode dropper' to lower the voltage to the PSU fan. The integrated ATI graphics, however, leave a lot to be desire...
