You know I think this thread will SCARE some folks. I just got a VelociRaptor to replace a WD SE-16. Replaced it in the same fabric suspension bay in Antec Solo case. I did not remove the IcePak. Noise to me is overall LESS in use than the SE-16 it replaces. Maybe a tiny bit of the high-pitched whin...

My old modem had a flaky power switch so I called Sonic.net and they sent me the Motorola as a replacement. It's really TINY, and at only 2 Watts seems very thrifty. The problem with most "all-in-one" solutions for me is they are usually pretty junky. I am enough of an IT networking geek to want bet...

low-power DSL modem
Just thought I would start a thread about DSL modem power consumption. I obsess a bit with seeing where I can squeeze out a few Watts less here and there around the house and ALWAYS-ON electronics are one of my favorite targets. I have a Watts Up? meter and measured these: Zoom 0226 ADSL modem = 9 W...

Unfortunately the device is already employed as a small server now. Running Apache, RADIUS, Nagios and a few other things. It performs very well at these tasks and I love the zero noise and low power aspects. Sorry but I am no longer free to try XP or muck around with desktop testing. Perhaps someon...

I have the D-Link DGS2208 switch and the wart seems very efficient as is the switch itself. With ports unloaded the device takes less than 1 Watt. I would assume their "Green Ethernet" routers are the same although I haven't specifically tested one. http://www.dlink.com/corporate/environment/dlink-g...

Apologies but running Fit-PC Slim as a desktop is not my interest. So I don't plan to load XP or any Linux desktop flavors. I don't think this would make a spectacular HTPC something like Asus EEE Box would be better. I use a Samsung Q1 Ultra UMPC I picked up off EBay for $450 for watching video on ...

One oddity I didn't see anything in BIOS for timed power control. Many PC allow you to set up a timer so if it's off it gets turned on at 4AM or something like that. Okay this part is COOL, in the BIOS you can underclock the CPU/RAM to lower levels. Went all the way down to 200 MHz. I didn't do powe...

Followup, it was sent USPS Priority Mail and arrived today. I am quite impressed with the build. Tiny! I will report more after having loaded OS onto it. I have installed a Samsung 160-gig drive. I have attached a LiteOn USB DVD drive to rear USB port, and keyboard and mouse to the front. Currently ...

Wow! Got new switch in ran a quick compare: Existing switch was 5-port SMC gigabit switch. Consuming 8 Watts no matter 5 ports active or zero ports. DGS2208 used about 4 Watts (bouncing up & down) during boot. But once it was done booting, showed ZERO watts with no ports active. Okay this just means...

I reposted this in "Green Computing" after realizing it wasn't the best spot. The reply over there pointed me to D-Link "GreenEthernet" products. I ordered a DGS2208 which specifies a max of 6 Watts with all ports in full use at longest length. If cables are shorter and not all ports are in use it s...

Ah thanks! This D-Link "GreenEthernet" looks quite interesting. I found the DGS2208 at NewEgg for $35 after a rebate, and free shipping. Very good deal and they claim a max of 6 Watts at full utilization on all 8 ports. When cable lengths are shorter or not all in use it powers down those ports to s...

Low-power switch?
Does anyone know of a good low-power network switch? Ideally need 8 ports 100 megabit. It seems silly that I'll have a Fit-PC Slim on my network soon which uses about 6 Watts. And a switch which uses as much or more power. Example the Netgear FS108 uses about 7.5 Watts. I mistakenly posted this in a...

I ordered the diskless Fit-PC Slim with 512 megs RAM will report in later. My interest is primarily a little Linux server for the closet, to offer a Samba share for the house and maybe some other things. So if I want to download Linux distros I can just run BitTorrent on that, and not have to leave ...

There is a Gigabyte mini-ITX board with 6 SATA. GA-EG45M-DS2H If you want redundancy, mirror a couple of large disks. This is not 1990 so it's just insane IMO to do RAID5 any more. http://www.baarf.com If I have terabyte or so of data, it's probably something that matters to me enough not to expose ...
