Re: Best CPU cooler for Antec NSK2480 HTPC
Resurrecting this old thread! Which cooler did you end up installing Finboss? I've got the NSK2480, MA78GPM-DS2H & Athlon 64 X2 4850e HTPC set-up which was all the rage a few years back. The stock cooler noise is now becoming even more annoying and I never did find a local source for Mini Nin...

Is there a safe way to check whether the CPU cooler or the PSU is causing the noise? It is a noticable whirring noise, audible throughout the room (wood-floored dining room) and it is actually really annoying. Is it safe to unplug the CPU fan with the stock cooler, even if only for a few seconds? E...

Given the current weather in Scotland you shouldn't need a cooler! Are you sure it's the CPU fan that's causing the noise and not the PSU, case fan or graphics card fan? I've got an LE in my server and it's pretty quiet even with the stock HS&F. Maybe wait until you've done the case swap befor...

Antec PSU 'best before' date?
If it is as big an issue as the (alleged) Ante Rep states, maybe Antec need to start putting a "best before" or "use by" date on all of their PSUs - just like Sainsburys et al do with their tins of Baked Beans!

Re: Would you buy another Antec product after this incident
Otherwise, why would you ever buy their products after something like this? Just because an individual proporting to represent Antec makes some ill-judged comments in a thread, you would cease to buy their product? If you follow the line that you shouldn't buy product from a company that has 'less ...

If you are talking 24/7 power on but sitting idle most of the time you want low power draw not RE (RAID Edition) drives. If you are writing to it 24/7 you need higher RPM drives and RE makes a little more sense. In my world no drive gets written to 24/7. The closest I get to that is on a Web server...

EADS drives?
What about the WD10EADS or WD15EADS 'green' drives?
They're averaging about AU$100 & AU$140 respectively here in Oz.
Unfortunately the WD20EADS still seems too high on 'cost per Gb' ratio at the moment (AU$260)).

Re: Removing Sonata III door
I have this case and I'd like to install it for a friend, as a replacement for a generic case w/ poor ventilation. Seeing as "power on keyboard" support is flaky on his motherboard, I would like to remove the Sonata's front door to ease access to the power button. Would that be a straightforward mo...

Obsolete system?
That said the bit of searching I did seemed to indicate the X2 3800+ could be had for as low as $30 - $40AUD, and the X2 4200+ could be had for as low as $40 - $50AUD. Are those prices reasonable? If you can get them at that price fair enough but I sold a DC 4800+ x2 on eBay a year or so ago and fu...

WD15EADS = $/GB value
Likewise, I found the WD15EADS locally to be better $/Gb value than the WD10EADS and the WD20EADS to be just silly expensive.
I now have a WD10EACS, WD10EADS & WD15EADS in my WHS box.

Re: Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2/H?
So are you geting 58w for your particular system with 4 HDDs connected? According to my plug-in power meter - yes. On start-up it shows a MAX of 73w but I'm advised that the momentary draw will be significantly higher than that but this consumer level meter isn't sophisticated enough to 'catch' it....

Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2/H?
The Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2/H has six SATA ports, has pretty low power consumption (~58w at the wall) and will take a wide variety of CPUs (inc AM3). I've got a Sempron CPU in mine and 4HDDs connected.
I should manage to get that consumption a bit lower with a picoPSU.

UPDATE (with question)
I just bought a power meter and it seems to indicate the start-up load as (surprisingly) under 80w and sub-60w when running.
Is there likely to be any problem with still buying a 150w PicoPSU, other than a slight cost difference, over a smaller wattage unit?

Aussie SPCRers: How accurate are Jaycar power meters?
As the title states, has anyone compared these units with a known load to check their accuracy? I bought one today and am pleasantly surprised to see how low my home servers start-up load actually is (73w Max draw and 56-58w @ 'idle'). Given that I will be using this information to purchase an appro...
