I haven't been able to find a place to buy the vibe fixer iii or pro in the USA, so I think I'll try the Logisys, which seems reasonably priced.
Btw, I am only really concerned about seek noise because the drive is pretty quiet except when there is a run of hard seeks.

Is the scythe himuro similar enough to the silent box to be recommended?

HD mounting kit for temjin tj08-e?
I have read in SPCR that "bungie" suspension is the best way avoid noise emission from internal hard drives. However, I can't use that solution because my box needs to be transportable without opening it up for surgery. Also, I am not so mechanically inclined for such a project. I have also read tha...

Re: HSF for i7-4790 in temjin tj08-e
I got the Noctua NH-U12s installed. This thing is a champ!
It keeps the CPU around 55c spinning about 700 rpm (on prime95 max torture). The two cases fans can now stay below 600 rpm, so things are very quiet. Thanks for the advice!
Only one remaining issue: occasional hard drive noise.

Heck, no! I replaced that with Noctua NH-U12s. My ear needs to be within half a meter of this box to hear anything at all.

I got the upgrade! I don't hear any whining. Just some barely audible grunge-like sounds.
I ran prime 95 for quite a while and was surprised that the seasonic didn't seem to warm up much.
Very pleased so far.

Oops, , forgot to mention GeForce gtx 750ti.
Still, I am not worried about total power. Just noise and heat at the top of the case.

Platinum Fanless for TJ-08e wuth Core i7-4790?
I just got a system with a Core i7-4790 in a Temjin TJ08-e. In low-load conditions, the most audible thing about it is the Antec VP450F power supply. I wish I'd gotten an SPCR-recommended one! Would it make sense for me to upgrade to a Seasonic Platinum Fanless 460? Here is my BOM: * Core i7-...

Re: HSF for i7-4790 in temjin tj08-e
I need to get this through a local shop that will install, because I've had so much trouble installing them in the past (I'm not that mechanical, I guess). They have the NH-12s and may have or be able to get the Thermalright TS-120 or Ultra-120, which would save a few bucks. These should all work fi...

You've all convinced me to look at something like the Kotetsu. However, Kotetsu is not easily available in the USA as far as I can tell. So I guess something else on that scale is what I'm looking for.

Wow, good information here.
BTW, is it possible to increase the threshold of the Gryphon up to, say, 80c, just to see what happens? This would help me see how much improvement is needed.

Re: HSF for i7-4790 in temjin tj08-e
Thanks, but that looks pretty big to me. A couple of years ago, I used a Scythe Samurai http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1049-page1.html in some Sandy Bridge builds. Those are no longer available.
Is there anything on that scale that is currently recommended for my purpose?

HSF for i7-4790 in temjin tj08-e
I just got a system with a Core i7-4790 in a Temjin TJ08-e. It is quiet enough at idle but too noisy when loaded heavily. I am hoping that a better HSF will help, but I also hope I won't have to install one of the giant ones that are needed by overclockers. The way things are, all the fans have to b...

Mine Works Great
My N4L runs great as part of an essentially inaudible system in an Antec P150 case. I have a Core Duo t2400 and the stock CPUFan.
It's been running almost a year now. In the early months, there were quite a few crashes. After about 3 BIOS upgrades, things have been very stable, quiet, and fast.

Coincidentally, I was trying out a Buffalo Terastation around the same time you were testing the Newisys. I agree that NAS is a great idea because you can put your noise-making drives in the closet. Performance is probably good enough for "most uses." I expected to also keep a boot drive that would ...

I've ordered most of the parts from NewEgg, including a core duo T2400 for $295. I'll get the P150 locally, in case I have to return it. Based on the review's info on the CPU fan's RPM, I'm betting it will be quiet enough. After a week or so, I'll be happy to answer other folk's questions about how ...

I appreciate what mats is saying. If the CPU fan turns out to be too loud, it will be a hard problem to fix. Still, I haven't seen any independent review of the AOpen motherboard(s). The only alternative is to wait. Possible good news: the Asus web site shows a downloadable BIOS update that fixes th...

One thought about external enclosures: if you get a long cable you can put it further away from your ears! On the other hand, it needs its very own fan. Plus, how long a cable can you get, anyway? So, I tried getting a TeraStation NAS from Buffalo. Ethernet cables can be very long, so you can put it...

Regarding haugland and mats comments on the CPU heatsink/fan: That's an area where I certainly don't have much expertise. I suppose hands-on experience with the particular parts would be best. If it does cause noise, why wouldn't I be able to swap it out? Is socket-479 (or whatever you call it) not ...

Regarding choice of Motherboard and PSU
Back on March 27, Fearless Leader noted that several desktop core duo products were "Coming Soon." I had hoped that, by the end of April, we would have a few well-reviewed motherboards to choose from. Thus far, I have not seen much evidence in favor of any 945gt or 945gm microatx (or atx) motherboar...

Asus and NeoHe
Thanks for that feedback.
I read in another topic that some problems are related to a motherboard drawing less than 1A of power around startup time. Is this the culprit with the NeoHe, or does it have problems other than that? I probably should go and read some of those other threads...

P150 + Asus N4L + Core Duo + GeForce 7600
Hi Guys. Thanks for all the great information over the last few years! I am finally about ready to take the plunge and build my own quiet system. I am thinking of building a Core Duo system in an Antec P150 case with an Asus N4L-VM DH and a Geforce 7600GS. I'll get a Samsung hard drive as y'all reco...
