Re: Any ideas for cooling a socket 988/G2 processor?

Fit just fine. Passive with ok but not great air flow yielded temps near max allowable on synthetic tests. Plopped a 800rpm near silent case fan on it and temps are great.

Any ideas for cooling a socket 988/G2 processor?

Its been 10 years since my last post, so probably about time. i7-3610QM / 45 watts. Stock cooler sounds like a freight train and motherboard PWM seems to not work. CPU fan is 50mm. Willing to take quiet over silent, but there doesn't seem to be much out there. I think this thing would fit: http://ww...

The forums at bjorn3d.com host some XFX tech support. I'm not sure of the exact nature of that agreement, but you could get some attention about it there.

Speedfan update

By chance, I was looking over the speedfan website today and found the following text at the top: SpeedFan 4.29 Final is available. There are a lot of improvements and fixes. Added support for Intel ICH8, nVidia MCP04, new revisions of the ITE IT8712F, new revisions of the Winbond W83627, and detect...

No surprise here. Why would anyone get an "low power" solution on a 90nm process when they have access to 65nm CPUs is beyond me. Fanboism would be the only explanation.
Wasn't the pentium D 65nm?

Does that motherboard support fan speed control? If so, it might not be too bad on low loads. Hi loads could probably cause it to get pretty loud though. You can always try and if it's too noisy, make the upgrade. Yes, there is a largely unadjustable BIOS feature which can be disabled in favor of s...

So the stock clock rate on standard and EE models of the X2 3800 is 2.0GHz. What was the article talking about here? Note that there is nothing extraordinary that Energy Efficient AMD processors appeared in the market. It is known that there is a linear dependence of the CPU heat dissipation on proc...

There are no benchmark comparisons of the EE vs standard vs Conroe processors that I know of. The EE versions are cherry picked, but clocked lower. I wonder if perhaps they take less of a performance hit than their 85w TDP bretheren would when underclocked.

They seem to have concluded performance per watt for us, but I was hoping to see actual benchmark/performance numbers alongside the power consumption measures to determine just where the X2 3800 stands.

Couple things...first, the vast majority of cases don't come with any sort of CPU cooling device. Also, bear in mind that current video card solutions tend to come with noisy fans. I'm not saying that you need to go with changing the cooler on that, but if you are aiming for a quiet computer, you'll...

I have a motherboard with q-fan2, and the most useful aspect of it is that I can disable it  Seriously though, I think that asus motherboards with qfan2 will allow Speedfan to change the fan speeds. So although the qfan software itself isn't useful, the presence of qfan2 should allow you to con...

Sorry, I think I misspoke earlier. The M2N-E is an nforce5 board. The fact remains that the ethernet drivers didn't work by default, and I wasn't able to get them to work after ~30 minutes of messing around. Maybe things will fall into place in a few months.

I originally had the P150 as my #1 case choice for at least one of the systems, but all the bad stories about the NeoHE PS + Asus motherboards honestly scared me. A 2fer! Sounds like fun. My first thought is, is there any reason why you wouldn't want to go with the Antec P150 w/ PSU? As the SPCR review points out, the PSU is right up there with the seasonic on efficiency, noise, and quality. Using this bundle will save you $30+ on each build. Also, on the vid...

I wouldn't choose your final motherboard/processor until it gets closer to the time that you actually order. That will give the new intel processors time to hit the market, and for more end users to see real numbers. One thing you should also note is that quiet is a bit subjective. That said, this s...

I don't remember exactly. It has been a couple of weeks since I've worked with it. However, I did try googling around, and I am not the only person with the ethernet issue.

edit: I should say, I am not particularly knowledgable when it comes to dealing with driver issues in Linux.

Well, I can advise you on what NOT to get. I just built an AM2 system with an Asus M2N-E (nforce4), and there are lots of issues in Linux. I couldn't get the integrated NIC to work, and sound is spotty.

I'm a little lost. Was the 9500 on before the ninja?

Also, I've read some issues where the base of the Ninja isn't flat. Perhaps try taking it off, and make sure that the entire base is making contact with the IHS of the processor.

It is possible that you will see compatibility issues between the motherboard and the PSU. See here: http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=27863&start=0 Also, why not go with AM2? Ideas on quietly cooling my Sempron 3000

AM2 Sempron 3000. I'm using the stock HSF with the stock thermal pad. Also, I use speedfan to control the speed of the CPU fan and the chassis. At the stock clock/voltage and at idle, speedfan runs the fan at the minimum, 72%. At 72%, it is almost inaudible. There is occasional bearing noise, but ve...
