Re: Any ideas for cooling a socket 988/G2 processor?
Fit just fine. Passive with ok but not great air flow yielded temps near max allowable on synthetic tests. Plopped a 800rpm near silent case fan on it and temps are great.

Any ideas for cooling a socket 988/G2 processor?
Its been 10 years since my last post, so probably about time. i7-3610QM / 45 watts. Stock cooler sounds like a freight train and motherboard PWM seems to not work. CPU fan is 50mm. Willing to take quiet over silent, but there doesn't seem to be much out there. I think this thing would fit: http://ww...

Speedfan update
By chance, I was looking over the speedfan website today and found the following text at the top: SpeedFan 4.29 Final is available. There are a lot of improvements and fixes. Added support for Intel ICH8, nVidia MCP04, new revisions of the ITE IT8712F, new revisions of the Winbond W83627, and detect...

Does that motherboard support fan speed control? If so, it might not be too bad on low loads. Hi loads could probably cause it to get pretty loud though. You can always try and if it's too noisy, make the upgrade. Yes, there is a largely unadjustable BIOS feature which can be disabled in favor of s...

So the stock clock rate on standard and EE models of the X2 3800 is 2.0GHz. What was the article talking about here? Note that there is nothing extraordinary that Energy Efficient AMD processors appeared in the market. It is known that there is a linear dependence of the CPU heat dissipation on proc...

Couple things...first, the vast majority of cases don't come with any sort of CPU cooling device. Also, bear in mind that current video card solutions tend to come with noisy fans. I'm not saying that you need to go with changing the cooler on that, but if you are aiming for a quiet computer, you'll...

I have a motherboard with q-fan2, and the most useful aspect of it is that I can disable it  Seriously though, I think that asus motherboards with qfan2 will allow Speedfan to change the fan speeds. So although the qfan software itself isn't useful, the presence of qfan2 should allow you to con...

You're talking about spending what, 1500+ on a new computer? It is definitely in your interest to get every question that you might have answered beforehand. I went through 3-4 tech forums on my latest built before I started getting the answers that I "wanted" to hear (they happened to be here 8) )....

I originally had the P150 as my #1 case choice for at least one of the systems, but all the bad stories about the NeoHE PS + Asus motherboards honestly scared me. I'm trying to avoid any incompatibilities, and I've read quite a few good reviews on the Seasonic and recently the Antec Solo case. I'm ...

A 2fer! Sounds like fun. My first thought is, is there any reason why you wouldn't want to go with the Antec P150 w/ PSU? As the SPCR review points out, the PSU is right up there with the seasonic on efficiency, noise, and quality. Using this bundle will save you $30+ on each build. Also, on the vid...

I wouldn't choose your final motherboard/processor until it gets closer to the time that you actually order. That will give the new intel processors time to hit the market, and for more end users to see real numbers. One thing you should also note is that quiet is a bit subjective. That said, this s...

Well, I just built the following rig for myself: Antec P150 w/ NeoHE430 Asus M2N-E AM2 Sempron 3000 1GB Ram XFX Passively Cooled Geforce 7300GT It is pretty similar to your build in some ways. I decided to go with the sempron 3000 to hold me over until the AMD price cuts came. Now I will probably ho...

It is possible that you will see compatibility issues between the motherboard and the PSU. See here: http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=27863&start=0 Also, why not go with AM2? That will keep your options open in the future in terms of a CPU upgrade. Finally, you didn't mention anythin...

Sure, I could go higher for the MB and probably the processor. But like you said, I think it would just create more time in between ramping up and ramping down. I think the temp is of the chipset, but I'm not entirely sure. A cheap 120mm cooler is a very interesting option. It might make more sense ...

Ideas on quietly cooling my Sempron 3000
AM2 Sempron 3000. I'm using the stock HSF with the stock thermal pad. Also, I use speedfan to control the speed of the CPU fan and the chassis. At the stock clock/voltage and at idle, speedfan runs the fan at the minimum, 72%. At 72%, it is almost inaudible. There is occasional bearing noise, but ve...
