Thanks for the tips; I'll be sure to post back how it went. The $300 tag doesn't sound too bad if the product performs well, and having hardware RAID simplifies things like OS boot a lot compared to using volume manager. Undecided on wether to try to find room in my chieftec miditower to suspend all...

You are planning to use RAID 5 for something it isn't intended to be used for. RAID 5 is NEVER a replacement for backups, this is a very common misconception. RAID 5 is a method to reduce downtime. I beg your pardon? RAID5 is just a technology, it doesn't care about your motivations. From where I a...

Thanks for the feedback to both of you. Inti, that pizza box looks just fantastic. It's really expensive, but I'm actually debating wether to get one anyway. Thanks also for the tips on optimum HDD orientation - if I do build a system of my own I'll keep it in mind. I agree that cable management wou...

Silent NAS, looking for ideas

Lately, I've been playing with the idea of building a combined MythTV backend and NAS server. Since it will be sitting on a shelf in my office / guest room, it would have to be near quiet - ie below ambient noise threshold from a distance of a few feet. Rather than sticking everything inside a big t...
