Re: Fan Roundup #7: Antec, be quiet!, Corsair, GELID, Noiseb
Really appreciate the fan roundups. I realize they're a lot of work, but this is generally the most important part of building a quiet computer.

Re: Scythe Kozuti Low Profile CPU Heatsink
You said at the end of the review: "pound-for-pound, and inch-for-inch, the most efficient model yet" and "impressive little heatsink that performs better than we could've imagined." Given that, I was expecting at least a SPCR Recommended tag at the end - what made you hold off? Just the price?

I need a power supply that won't squeal
I started this computer with a Corsair VX450. It was very quiet when the system was stressed (100+ watts), but at idle and especially when the system was suspended it squealed like a tiny banshee. So I tossed it in a box and got an Enermax Modu 82+ (500 watt version). It was very quiet until I was f...

Re: silent pc with Define R3 vs silent system with Define Mi
All other things being equal, a larger case is generally less cramped and allows for better airflow. The Define Mini looks like it won't really be all that small, however, so it may not make much of a difference. The Define Mini also has room for six hard drives, which means there should be plenty o...

Re: The quietest 120mm fan
This is just... silly. You can't ignore air flow amount, that's the whole point of having a fan. The Nexus I have sitting next to me is as quiet as the quietest fan out there - it's unplugged.

The Apex case isn't exactly what I had in mind, but it gets points for being super cheap. I might be able to make that work, thanks.

Re: Need advices for a GA-6KIEH-RH (case, psu, fan)
Need a robust and fast hard drive solution (raid 1) for let say at least 2To of data So you need two 3.5'' drives. Do you want to suspend them? I've actually been looking to put together a mini NAS system and the only decent cases that I've been able to find that support more than one 3.5" drive ar...

Re: Need advices for a GA-6KIEH-RH (case, psu, fan)
That Gigabyte board looks pretty great. If you wanted to stick with low power mobile CPUs, AOpen has a board that looks good, the s760GXm-S. I've had a couple of AOpen boards in the past and really liked them, but they have a tendency to use loud, active, chipset coolers. So you should expect to rep...

Re: I need some help diagnosing my system instability
Well, all right. Results: linpack - no errors cinebench - no errors (doesn't seem to push the GPU that hard, never got above 55 degrees C) Furmark did the trick, crashing quickly at 71 and 75 degrees when I ran it at 1920x1080 (my monitor's resolution). Did that twice. However, it's a little more in...

I need some help diagnosing my system instability
Over the last couple of weeks my system has gotten increasingly unstable and I'm out of ideas on what the cause could be, so I'm asking here to try and find someone smarter than me. I can reliably crash my system within a few minutes of starting Portal 2 (getting into the 3D portion of the game, I c...

Re: HP MicroServer
Does the BIOS allow booting off USB? Thanks for the excellent review, Mike. This is a tempting home server, but I'm still balancing out the lack of RAID5 with the configurable RAM and more powerful CPU of a NAS... If you don't use a crippled OS like Windows, you can have RAID-5. And 6 or 10 (or tru...

This may be a shot in the dark, but you've done a string of Lian-Li case reviews now - I would love to see an SPCR review of the just-released PC-X500FX. In no way could it be ever be worth the price, but I'd still like to hear someone that I respect say something nice about it before I buy one.

Well, ok. I guess I made the assumption based on the different different rpm value than listed (1460 rpm) and on how that scaled with voltage, though looking at it again it seems to be wishful thinking. I only see three wires in that picture, but it's pretty small. Ok, so do they just not make heats...

Lookin' for a Big Shuriken (original model)
So the 113mm shuriken with the standard 3 wire fan that was reviewed here: http://www.silentpcreview.com/article964-page3.html doesn't seem to exist anymore, or at least I can't find it anywhere. It's been replaced by a slightly taller 120mm model and a 100mm model, both with PWM fans at 2200 max rp...

Thoughts/suggestions on PS3 silencing
I'm talking here about the original (noisy) 60 GB PS3. I've made a couple of attempts at quieting this and the changes have helped, a little, but the thing is still unacceptably loud. What it really needs are a couple of larger top-down coolers to which I can attach some quieter fans. It has a solid...

Why don't you include Orochi in your comparisons? This has been mentioned in other reviews, but the reason is because the retention mechanism is inadequate for such a heavy heatsink. Since the Orochi has been updated to include a backplate I believe that Mike said something less negative about the ...

Anybody want to talk about quiet humidifiers?
Decided that I didn't want to go through another winter of scratching, so I'm looking for a humidifier. Because it's something that needs to be on pretty much all the time, and because the noise issue with it is basically the same as it is with my computer, my first instinct was to discuss it here. ...

I like the overhaul, though, having read the reviews, I'm a little bit surprised at where some of the PSUs have landed. It might not be quite as well suited to running tests, but you can get miniITX boards with mobile chipsets that take socket M mobile processors. good catch, yes I multiplied the subjective motor noise scare by 2, will adjust formula asap to reflect the one I used in Excel. But you didn't for all of them. Hey, I'm a little confused as to how the motor noise rating was applied to some of your results. The formula says that the subjective noise rating was simply subtracted, and that holds for some of the fans on the graph, but for others it looks like two times the noise rating was subtracted. For exam...
