Yuck!
I have one of those sitting on a wish list... thanks for the heads-up. I wanted to use it to shove air into my quiet workstation- for that sort of noise, I might as well use a Sunon.

Definitely a good start
About "playing with Linux"... I usually just people a live CD (Knoppix or Ubuntu) to play with. If they're game after that, I show them how to fold, spindle, and mutilate an install in a virtual machine. Aside from play, the best way to learn is to break it and learn how to fix it- with the Virtual ...

Hi, it's your helpful marketing dept.
When all of your product lines are late and/or not meeting projections, marketing slime does announcements. When they're out of actual products to announce, they start announcing dead on arrival, silly, standards. I doubt they're even going to get anyone to produce a board, and if they do, it'll jus...

The organisms that were mentioned by the articles live under conditions that wouldn't be very good for the oil eaters, and vice versa. The (oil eaters) P...

Looking for opinions: Antec Solo or P150
I'm building a quiet(ish), low availability, home server for someone, and am looking at Antec cases- is there a significant difference between the Solo or the P150, aside from the included P/S in the latter? I don't really see much difference, but was wondering if one was quieter, better built, easi...

I'm kind of surprised that you needed SCSI drives for your host system, given the load you described. Did you already have them sitting around? Why would anybody choose the A10B over the P182? Possible reasons include, but are not limited to: 1) Weight 2) Durability 3) Ease of Assembly 4) Construction Quality/Attention to detail 5) More drive mounting/alignment options 6) Personal taste/aesthetics 7) Lian-Li case accessories 8) Ease of mod...

I have a RAID6 box that would probably give some of the minimalist zealots here apoplexy. Aside from using a controller with a proprietary multiplexing connector , making the cables neater is just going to put stress on the connectors, and won't really help airflow that much. Some times you just nee...

Article in Science News (July 28, 2007)
God forbid some facts actually get injected into a discussion in the Off-Topic forum, but there's a nice discussion of the subject in the AAAS publication, Science News. Re: Wildly different noise ratings on another site
Why unpredictably ? Prior to MikeC's comment, I hadn't considered resonance- I'd expected something like a linear or parabolic function. That would at least give the same ranking to the same devices. I had considered other things, like large standard error resulting from a low number of samples bei...

Wildly different noise ratings on another site
I was reading LGA775 CPU cooler reviews on another website, and the numbers they reported for noise were quite different than what I've seen here. When I see radically different dba numbers on e-commerce websites, I usually ascribe it to the e-tailer copying and pasting the manufacturer's lies, er u...
