Re: Small fan blocking or helping big fan?
Thanks for the input. Actually, the only setting available in BIOS is the minimum allowed fan speed, which as you say make the fans really quiet. However, in real use, the fans never spin that slow, not even near. Seems to be a common problem with this model. Well, I have 3 Fanmates coming my way, s...

Small fan blocking or helping big fan?
I'm currently trying to silence a SFF HP Compaq (dc7800) to use it as a HTPC. It's really nicely built, with intelligent airflow design, but comes with incredibly loud fans and/or lousy PWM algorithms. Anyway, it looks like this inside http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/4509/a3784z2.jpg What I've do...

Re: Fake CPU fan
If the fans you are using puts out an RPM signal then you could feed that to the CPU fan header. Oh, I didn't realize that the fans are detected using the RPM signal. Sorry for that.. Since the Arctic Cooling PWM-fans use some kind of strange daisy chain wiring, maybe I can just plug the ext...

Fake CPU fan
Hi, I'm currently turning an old HP Compaq dc7800 SFF into a "silent" HTPC. To do that, I want to change the chassi fan and the PSU fan to PWM fans from Arctic Cooling, so far so good. I also want to completely remove the CPU fan, which is not needed (The thermally controlled chassi fan blows throug...

Silencing work computer
I've got an Intel P4 3,0 GHz based computer at work that's testing my patience. It's not that it's extremely noisy, but after a hard days work fans are really tiresome to listen to. The PSU is a nice and quiet one, and the CPU-fan seems to be temperature controlled as it only speeds up occasionally....

Thanks for your kind replies. Really appreciate info about the AMD lineup, as I (in contrast to previous poster) haven't kept up on their pros and cons. Intel Pentium 4 631 (3 GHz) is manufactured in a 65 nm process and supports both SpeedStep/EIST and the enhanced C1E halt-command . To me, this sou...

Cool, Competent and Cheap underdog – Intel Pentium 4 631?
I’ve been trying to compose a really low budget computer that will perform well under Vista (Aero). Almost ended up with a Intel Core 2 Duo E4300, 2 GB RAM and keeping my old Radeon 9800 Pro, when I suddenly stumbled upon a short article about the updated 6x1-series in the Pentium 4-family . 65 nm...

Ditching the Core 2 Duo in favor of a Pentium 4 631
Thanks for your great replies! They have been very helpful. As I'm not in to gaming I'm thinking of ditching the core 2 duo and go for a Pentium 4 631. They are approximatly half the price, and supposed to be pretty nice in their latest revision, D0 stepping. Check out this article 65 TDP, as low as...

Hi, new active member but have been reading now and then for the last couple of years. :D It's time to upgrade my old computer with a new one, and would really appreciate some input. I've looked looked around in the forums and tried to figure out some parts of a suitable setup. But now my needs... F...
