Re: SilverStone Temjin TJ08-E: MicroATX Evolved
Why not test with the HDD Cage removed? Should yield better airflow and allow Noctua fan in correct orientation. Just as your argument for MATX is that most don't need lots of expansion cards, most also don't need lots of of HDD. Also don't buy your argument for not testing with different fans. You ...

I would say that having blu-ray is essential to an HTPC. I never understood this. Yes, you want Blu-Ray, but it's not like you can't buy a standalone Blu-Ray player. Unless you can live with a 17" notebook screen, your 1080P display isn't going to be built into your HTPC. Your surround sound speake...

I wonder how a laptop would deal with periods of extended use or always on. For the past 10 years I've had laptops for my work computer. Current one is about 3 years old (maybe older, it was a hand-me-down from a previous employee) and I've had multiple instances of running it continuously for 14 h...

I'm basically asking if you are running the Cat5 in the wall. Otherwise, how is the lightning strike going to get to it? It would have to go through one of the connected devices, which is either going to be saved by your surge arrestor or be fried and become a big resistor, right? Show me the spec ...

I still see plenty of conflicting information out there. The article you link to says CPU, graphics and memory controller will all be on the same chip. Most of other recent stuff out there says the graphics will only be on die, like the current i3, not on chip . . . Unless Sandy Bridge brings a revo...

A good start would be to get off the 2 party treadmill that most are simply unwilling to do. I tend to agree with this, but it is interesting to note that many in countries with a multiparty system wish they could switch to our system . . . The grass is always greener, I suppose. It may be as Georg...

Re: best bang/buck silent pc
i would also need integrated graphics that will work with the new flash beta hardware acceleration. i think the ati hd4200 does this. There will never be a motherboard supporting i3 with AMD IGP. I think even Nvidia IGP is unlikely. After all, the whole point of i3 is that you get an IGP right on t...

Re: flash beta hardware acceleration
What is this flash beta hardware acceleration? How much of an effect does it have on internet browsing? Flash 10.1. Uses GPU to accelerate video decoding tasks. Main use of it is to allow support of 1080P resolution Flash video without a quad-core CPU. Most dual-cores can handles 720P and below fin...

For HDDs I'm fairly likely to go with WD Velocraptors You say Velociraptors, plural, and I don't see the point of that. If you can live with just 300 GB, yes VR might be the best way to go, but if you need more storage than that, why not go with a 60 GB SSD coupled with large format 3.5" drives for...

Look into software for controlling fan speed, both CPU and GPU. On the CPU end, have you explored your BIOS options? If so, and you're not satisfied, try SpeedFan. For GPU there is ATI Overdrive and other such software. If you try all of these and aren't satisfied, then it is time to explore afterma...

For the configuration as described, 150W or better. If you really go to 4 HDD, 250W or better (people forget that HDD call for about 20W when the first spin up, even if their operating peak power is < 10W). If you are looking for an ATX form factor PSU, just get something of good quality in the 300-...

Re: 2.5" vs 3.5" + SSD?
Glancing through the forums a bit, I don't really see anyone using 2.5" hard drives over 3.5" to reduce noise. What makes 2.5" drives generally quiet is that they are generally 5400 RPM, not that they are 2.5". A 5400 RPM 3.5" will be similarly quiet and perform better (thanks to geometry) and prov...

WD Velociraptor is 2.5" and better performance than 7200.11. SPCR found it pretty quiet for a high-performance drive, as well. There are plenty of 7200 RPM 2.5" drives out there, but I wonder at their acoustics. It is more the 5400 RPM that is typical of a 2.5" drive than the form-factor that makes ...

What tests are those? I've seen very little review of Nano based solutions. I'd be especially interested to see it compared to the new BOXD510MO, rather than a power hungry D945GCFL2.MoJo wrote:It's idle power that counts and in every test I have seen the Nano beats a dual core Atom by at least a few watts.

You can't really compare latencies between DDR and DDR2, let alone DDR3. 8-8-8-20 @1333 isn't bad at all. Look at it this way, the tRAS might seem high, but what about the 1333 part? Your 2-2-2-5 DDR was probably 400 Mhz, or maybe even lower.MadHarry wrote:It is just that these days, tRAS of 24, sheesh!

Wouldn't houses be more efficient if they had a DC rail from the wall? dump all these little ac/dc converters and have one large and efficient converter after the meter.
