Plus I don't have any way to turn the voltage down, so I'm kind of stuck with the noise for now. Lesson learned: get the low speed variety! I got a new motherboard and can turn the voltage down, now. I've been getting them down to around 500rpm which is pretty much inaudible, so it isn't all bad. S...

If you want a REAL keyboard head to kinesis ergo and get one of their contoured keyboards. It'll only set you back $300 (but if you spend a lot of time on the computer it's well worth it!).

You should really consider getting a new case! I don't see how you can cool those components quietly in a case from 1999, unless you plan on cutting holes for 120mm fans yourself. You will also lose out on those handy phones/mic/usb/firewire front connectors. Can you post a pic of your case or tell...

Well, the TRUE did fit. Just barely! If someone had a case 18cm wide, I would tell them that it probably won't fit. But in case anyone's curious, it turns out that they've changed the way PSUs mount since 1999. My old PSU is exactly the same size, but the screws go in different places. Additionally,...

I got my three ultra kazes yesterday. I got the 2000 RPM variant, which I now think was a bad choice since they are pretty noisy. I know this is an unfair comparison, but my low speed YL is much much much much quieter. I don't know what possessed me to get the 2000 RPM variant. Plus I don't have any...

Maybe think about getting a faster OS/programs disk. I mean, if you're getting an enclosure regardless then why not... You're probably going to be spinning your wheels a lot more than you'd like with that 8*00. The idea behind getting a 2.5" was so that I could bring it to work and use it to carry ...

There are no linux drivers for the creative x-fi and linux. There are only some creative closed source beta drivers, built in sept 07, which only 50% of the people can get working after a lot of hassle. Just informing you ;) Thanks. I admit I am quite troubled by this-- I'm not a huge fan of creati...

New (hopefully) quiet build
This is my first new build since 1999, so I'm pretty excited, since it should be a leap up in terms of, well, everything. Goals: I'm going to use this as a development workstation and gaming machine. I'll do my development on a 64-bit linux and gaming on 32-bit XP. I want it to be quiet, but it does...

Re: How quiet is the Cooler Master CM690
I find that cases are very quiet in general. They don't really have any moving parts, and don't generate any heat at all. Now, the components you put in them, on the other hand...ElSteve wrote:I currently have a Xion II case, and its noisy and driving me crazy. Will the CM690 be any quieter?

After all, what really matters is not making the hypothetically fastest PC, but the one that is fastest in how you actually use it. Exactly, but there is no folding benchmark. I wish there was. Can't you try a setting, start the application, run it overnight, and see how far it gets? Surely there's...

Who besides NewEgg
I'm going to build a computer in about a month or so (specs coming soon). Very exciting and all, but since I now live in Tennessee, NewEgg charges (~10%!) sales tax (they have a warehouse in Memphis. I say we should just give Arkansas Memphis anyway). Where should I buy my PC from, given that I can'...

Measuring HDD Temp in Ubuntu
I've been doing this for a while now and I thought some of you might be interested. It's really simple. Just go to the command line and type "sudo apt-get install hddtemp". It'll ask if you want it to be run as a daemon, but I declined-- choose however you want, it doesn't matter. Now all you need t...

Re: The Cooler Master Hyper 212 - a really bad tower heatsin
And now for the cherry on top of this turkey: The cooling fin grid is in two parts, with a huge gap in between. Naturally, the cooling air passes directly thru this huge gap, producing no cooling effect at all. See the "gallery" in the manufacturer's link above. The two-piece cooling grid is illust...

If you use a TEC you'll have to dissipate móre heat. Because one side gets cold, but to do so, the other side gets a lot hotter. It's good for getting (extreme) low temperatures on a certain point, for example for overclocking. (Also said in the thread you mentioned.) This is off-topic, but I had ...

What did you use to do your modelling? I'm designing a case (albeit with very different goals) and I'd like to get into CAD, but I have no prior experience. I tried BRL-CAD, but I couldn't for the life of me figure it out. The only alternative I found didn't even do 3d modelling. As far as the case,...

Jeff Cutsinger.....not sure what you mean. In most positive pressure setups, the fan sucks through the filter, rather than trying to blow through it. And certainly the presence of a filter adds some airflow restriction, no matter what. Sorry, I should have been clear. In positive pressure setups, i...

Which is worse to the airflow from a computer fan......IMHO back-pressure. Try it yourself.....put a foam air filter in front of a fan, then behind the fan. Trying to blow through the filter (back pressure) reduces the airflow much more than sucking through the filter. That's why stand-alone air fi...

Hmm... it claims to have an unbeatable CFM/dB ratio. Has anyone tried undervolting this thing? 22cm fans typically have 100CFM/20dB. So 200CFM/60dB is not unbeatable, especially considering that 20dB is wayyyyy more than 3 times quieter than 60dB. Someone else could probably expound on undervolting...
