Pentium M ULV Laptop with a solid state hard drive

I've got an Acer Travelmate C111Tci laptop. The only noise it makes is the HDD spinning, and thats pretty quiet (key here is a 4200 drive not a 5400 drive). No fan anywhere. Its 3 years old now, mind, still doing me proud. The key is a 1Ghz ULV Pentium M and the laptop form factor (built to be fanle...

WD Scorpio = about half as loud as Momentus

Following my disappointment with the Momentus, I bought a Western Digital WD800 Scorpoio. 80GB, 8MB as per the Momentus. I did the same test as with the Momentus. I put it in the laptop and booted up with "No OS Installed". i.e. this just tests the drive's spinning noise, not reading and writing. Th...

Far too noisy for me (just got one), very disappointed

I just got an 80GB PATA version of this to replace my near-silent Hitachi TravelStar 4200rpm 40GB drive that came with my otherwise completely silent and highly recommended Acer C111TCi, three years in age. Model number ST98823A, FW: 3.04. I booted up with the Momentus and my laptop made a typical h...

Thank you *so* much for all your help here guys. For now, I've ordered a Tranquil T2 PC with just the one 250GB maxtor drive, in case it does get to hot or too noisy, like as a test. I also have a 40GB Barracuda lying around at home somewhere, so for now maybe I'll connect that up inside too and use...

Silent Backup Server

Hi all, I'm looking to put a Linux server in my parents' home (because I don't have a permanent residence myself) to do the following, in order of importance: 1. Provide a backup for a dedicated webserver I have, probably using rsync(?). If the webserver was to get hacked or break, the idea is that ...

"The Centrino processor chip will ship in three power/performance versions – the standard, low-voltage (LV), and ultra low-voltage (ULV) versions. The standard chip is expected to operate under 1 watt power consumption (compared to 1.5W for PIII-M and around 2.5W for PII-M) during normal use. The UL...

Mike - in my opinion, the Pentium M should be given a ranking of "7-10", or broken down into two separate categories. The 1GHz ULV is easily worth a 10 (if the C-3 gets one). Compared to the Via C-3 it dissipates less power and runs much faster in real-world applications (this is comparing my 1GHz U...

The information for Pentium M can't be correct. My Acer C111TCi Centrino powered by a Pentium M 1GHz uses just 14W with the screen turned on, 10W with screen off, as verified by a power meter I boght. That's at 'normal usage', not using CPU burn software or anything like that. And that's for the who...

The harddrive is a Hitachi ic25n040atmr04 40gb drive. Sorry, yeah, its not the only solution. But its the best one I've been able to find. I also wasted a lot of time and money in the past with a shuttle with a Via C3 chip and that was another £400 down the drain. Also, in terms of price £1,400 isn'...

Silence achieved... with a tablet pc

For a long time now I've been trying to get a silent computer. I didn't care if it was laptop or desktop. What I wanted was silence, or at least very-near silence. Enough so I can sleep two metres from the computer and not be able to hear it. Well, finally I've achieved that. Project Eden A few mont...

i dont know why, but something very similar happens with my friend as well using an epia eden 500. It only happens from time to time, after the machine has been on for days, and he can get rid of it by doing a restart.

Any ideas?

Here's an option...

Hi, You sound a lot like me. I'm fed up of quietening my system. If it 'aint silent then screw it. No - TFTs aren't totally silent - at least not mine. I've got a NEC MultiSync 1510 which, to me, is silent. But I've also got an NEC 1810X which buzes (because it's old and a bit broke I think, probabl...

I'm sure it's not because I've heard of people changing them before (see http://www.farstand.com/cgi-bin/pcg-c1/Forum.exe for example). It is hard to replace though, and requires a lot of patience and care.

Quietest laptop hard drive

My ears are extremely susceptible to any noise, and it drives me crazy. On my Sony Vaio PCG-C1VE laptop, because it has a Transmeta Crusoe which is fanless most the time, the only noise comes from the 12GB Fujitsu hard drive. And its loud, by my standards at least. Does anyone know what the quietest...
