Re: Intel 4930K thermal paste: dot or line?
There are multiple ways to apply, dot, the line, the cross, spreading it first, even multiple dots, etc. Personally I tried multiple ways and set the heat sink multiple times until I find the best spread that covers most of the CPU, just try and see what works better for you, there is no ideal or e...

Intel 4930K thermal paste: dot or line?
I've been using Arctic Silver's very detailed instructions before for all the processors where I didn't know how to apply thermal paste, but the hex-core Intel processors are just not in their database. My question is that what is the best way to apply thermal paste on a 4930K? It's with MX-4 and Mu...

OK, I was reading about the SuperNOVA 650W Gold, and everywhere on internet all I found was that it's noisy and not compatible with Gigabyte boards. http://www.amazon.co.uk/review/R3VVWL7BQ601C9/ref=cm_cr_pr_viewpnt#R3VVWL7BQ601C9 http://www.scan.co.uk/products/650w-evga-supernova-nex-full-modular-8...

Re: Video editing workstation
If you rather to get rid of the "quietness" requirement for any subjective or not reason, well, pick that EVGA: my somewhat educated guess is that probably you'd better not to ask to that system to be quieter than a MacPro, but who am I to make you unhappy? I never wanted to make it quieter than a ...

Re: Video editing workstation
If you are bulding a quiet setup, I would skip on EVGA, nothing bad on them, as a matter of fact, they are pretty good in terms of cooling and overclocking, and their warranty and rma are good. But in terms of noise there are better options, I would chose the msi tein frozr line over evga in all ca...

Re: Video editing workstation
Aside that usually the 750Ti IS NOT so close to 760 pricing (around 110 vs around 180 in UK), but the 750Ti draw less than half the power of a 760: so less heat dumped into the case, and less overall noise. Please do not forget also that the proposed EVGA is a bit noisy. OK, I agree there is no poi...

Re: Video editing workstation
Seasonic X 650W - 108 Due to the expected power draw, you may rather a PSU sporting a fan controller with a less aggressive profile. I choose it for the reliability, and even during rendering I don't think this system will use more than 250W of power, so it would still be in the <50% for this PSU. ...

Read the article and understand about balance - too bad they didn't back it up with benchmarks to show the tradeoffs - or maybe it's behind the paywall. Are you planning to OC this CPU? Mugen 4 vs Mugen 4 PCGH: You tradeoff 1 PWM fan for 2 voltage controlled fans with max 800rpm. You'll get a few d...

Staying within this budget, I'd replace the 2 x 7200 HDDs with another SSD. Have one SSD for OS and apps and another for the scratch disk. Then use the Green for storage. Is there a reason for the GTX 760 class gfx card? While many video editors can make use of the GPU for acceleration, there seems...

I'm building a video editing workstation for a friend, and I've tried my best to make a perfect system for him. The aim was to get a Mac Pro Hex-Core like computer for half the price. I've based the system around Puget System's Genesis, with some modifications where I found appropriate. The prices a...

Re: batch scripts for turning off hard drives from windows
Look, the world has changed. A server is not a noisy big box which runs on 200W in a rack, but something which people keep in their living room! Look into the market of NAS devices! These brands like Synology, QNap, etc. have grown exponentially in the last few years, for providing an easy to confi...

Re: batch scripts for turning off hard drives from windows
The thing is, whatever the name here contains, a server is a server, by definition. If i find a server to be too noisy, then your planning beforehand went wrong. It is a known fact, that HDDs make noise, so if i plan on using something with HDDs 24/7 i have to accept some kind of noise, eliminate t...

Re: batch scripts for turning off hard drives from windows
Even in the name of silence, I can't believe anyone would bother manually running a script to shut down a drive instead of letting the OS do it a couple minutes later. To say that you're overthinking this thing would be a gross understatement. Try not to let your OCD get the better of you. JJ, some...

Re: batch scripts for turning off hard drives from windows
Windows Server 2008 and 2012 were never designed to save power. What i do not understand is the fact that you WANT your HDDs to spin down. In dependance on how many times the HDDs will have to be powered up and need a small power consumption peak to do so vs. running constantly at a given power con...

Re: batch scripts for turning off hard drives from windows
If you don't have SMART monitoring tools active (accesses hard drives by direct access, not by volumes / partition), no buggy defrag utility, no buggy virus scanner, actually Windows 7 is really nice with hard drive management. Some time ago I stopped using these scripts and just let Windows 7 power...

Re: batch scripts for turning off hard drives from windows
I don't see the point to begin with. Isn't Windows own power management sufficient, spinning down idle hard drives after some configurable number of minutes? Not really, windows power management is pretty disappointing, random drive spin ups (MFT/ tracking.log) and to mention installers and similar...

Thankfully everything's sorted now :) I did use File Scavenger to retrieve my files to a spare HD, but then I used Testdisk to recover the partition which worked fine. File Scavenger seemed to do a better job at retrieving individual files though, as my Truecrypt container was the correct size, unl...

Thanks for the suggestions. File Scavenger looks like it might be useful. I've tried a couple of others and they aren't able to find any files in the unpartitioned space. Testdisk is a free partition recovery program and I tried it and it did identify my missing partition, and showed the label (Dat...

Or you can try Active Partion Recovery too:

I think you will need an other 1.5 TB drive temporarily.

In all the warranty period. That's how it works in almost all Europe. You only communicate with your reseller, which is both good and bad. In which shop did you purchase your disks? Where I live, you always contact your reseller for warranty problems and they give you a new one when they found out that it's indeed bad. For a hard drive it means I need to wait like 3 days till they test it and after 3 days I get a new drive. About being fast and efficient, I don't see the point....

Did some light tests while striping two of my three HD204UI drives together just for fun. Primarily I clocked the game Call of Duty 4 loading a specific ma...
