Re: 3220T, mini-ITX in an EZ65
Peter, an off topic question. In the second picture of your shuttle. Below the CPU heatsink is a row of 6 small capacitors Hi Andy, To clarify, I didn't take those pictures, I borrowed them from a review. I also don't use that motherboard anymore, I've replaced it by a mini-ITX one with an Atom. Wh...

Re: 3220T, mini-ITX in a Streacom case
Hi, I just want to mention that I'm considering kicking out the EZ65 completely. I have a shelf about 13cm above my desk and ideally, my new PC would fit under it. Because I want to use it as a media server, it needs to be visible for the remote control to work (can't find BlueTooth remotes). The St...

Re: 3220T, mini-ITX in an EZ65
As to the case: Haven't seen one, so i can't contribute any experience. But i suppose the PSU will be louder than anything inside, so you even might get away with intel stock cooler on the T-CPU. It's okay, actually. It'll be on the desk so I want to be a bit careful, but worst case I can rip it ou...

Re: 3220T, mini-ITX in an EZ65
2560x1440 is only supported via dual link DVI or displayport. If your motherboard/monitor combo supports those, you should be fine. But i haven't found any clues as to the GPU perfomance of HD 2500 at 2560x1440 resolution. Hi Pappnaas, I've selected the motherboard & monitor to work together: they ...

3220T, mini-ITX in an EZ65
Hi, I want to replace my current PC with a little box I already have. I would upgrade the internals. The purpose is to use it as a media server (XBMCBuntu) and some light computing tasks (a few documents + surfing). The screen will be a Dell U2711 at 2560x1440, which I need to keep in mind. Here's t...

After 10 days with the other power supply and no crash, it is looking like my fanless PSU has indeed become unstable, probably because of the bad electricity in the old house. Because the PC is stable now and I'm busy adjusting to life with a kid, the purchase of a new power supply isn't urgent (tho...

Small note to this thread: I think I figured out why my PSU may be damaged after such a "short" period of use. We bought an old house and lived in it for half a year (before moving out to a temporary appartment for during the renovation work). The electricity in that house was so crappy that there w...

Hi Mats, - Don't run any stress programs with that PSU. I'm not sure that the PSU could handle it for a longer time. Just a warning. I wasn't planning to ! Also, the BB PSU has a 20 pin ATX and I remember reading the extra 4 pins of a modern connector are there to supply more juice to the pro...

Hi, Update: I've installed the BB PSU as the PSU of my main PC. It looks like somebody dropped a bomb on my desk, with components and cables all over the place, but for the time being, it works. The complete system is connected: motherboard, all fans, disks and DVD. I decided to give it 2 weeks, wit...

Re: Why the i7 1366 ?
Put the BB PSU on top of the DVD bays or something else and connect all cables, then power it up. I've even done this without removing the extra PSU from its case, it looks like I'm jump starting a computer.. :D Yes, that's the configuration I was considering. I would also not remove the BB PSU fro...

Hi Mats, Nice to see a site owner who really cares about the quality of his forum. He's very right about this thread: I wish I'd come here before, because by now, you've saved me over €700. What's your PayPal account ? :) And that's my point. you pay a premium to make the CPU last as long as possi...

Are you happy with the performace of your current system? Yes. I think I could live with it for another few years. What do you think about this one? A new socket 939 board with integrated graphics from 2009. Sounds very good. I didn't know there were still 939 boards around. It has 2 PCI slots that...

Re: Why the i7 1366 ?
Hi Mats, But all this is probably not very interesting for you. How often would you stress all four cores for a longer time? I bet 99% of the time it will be running on lower speeds than 3.4 GHz. Your heatsink will work just fine. Good. I also figured out in the meantime that my 939 socket heatsink ...

Re: Why the i7 1366 ?
Hi Mats, Socket 1366 and 1156 will be replaced next year. Hmm, are you so sure about that ? I expect SandyWhatever will bring new sockets, but just like I can still buy processors for socket 775 (introduced 2004), I will still be able to buy 1366 processors in a few years. Particularly because the I...

Why the i7 1366 ?
Hi, Thanks, I'll look up that mounting kit and see if it'll work with my XP-120. Why did I choose the i7 920 or 930 ? Because, with an Asus P6X58D board, I get a system that already offers USB3 and SATA3 and, with just one 32nm processor out, gives me the feeling that I can upgrade the processor in ...

i7 920/930 and XP-120 (original) ?
Hi, My good old trusty motherboard has finally given up and I am considering upgrading to an i7 board with a 1366 socket. Would my original XP-120 (2004 version) still be sufficient or should I move to something fancier ? I was considering a Venomous X (push front-to-back towards the back fan) as a ...

Update: NAS ready
Hi, Short update on how everything went. I ordered 3* Samsung EcoGreen F2 1,5TB. One is for in my main PC, replacing the noisy set of 250+250+500GB Seagates. That PC is a lot quieter now ! I boot from a Raptor 150GB which I should suspend, but the Samsung is near inaudible even unsuspended. The othe...

surprisingly silent
I just installed a Samsung 1,5TB (F2 EcoGreen) and I'm surprised how silent it is compared to the Seagates I was using before (IIRC, 7200.8 250GB and 500GB). If only my Raptor boot disk was as silent, my PC would be near inaudible !

Hi, I'm currently looking at the WD 1500 GP indeed, or the Samsung F2 EcoGreen 1500. Both are under €100, giving me a mirrored 1,5TB for less than the price of one WD RE4. I'm looking into OpenSolaris with ZFS to mirror things. When I want to add an extra drive, there's a trick to move from a 2 di...

Hi, I'm looking for 2 drives of 1TB for a RAID system with FreeNAS. I'll be plugging them into an AOpen EZ65 cube which I'll try to underclock. Requirements are: reliability, low power, silent (in decreasing order of importance). I've looked at the Seagate 7200.12, but there's too many people experi...

Jhhoffma, What I'm trying to achieve with the sheets of aluminum and the styrofoam at the ends, is like what Bluefront shows in his link, but a little different. Hi Eberhard, I know, I'm mad :D 4 drives is a bit over the top, but hey, I'm not only addicted to silence in my PC. The raptor is there for speed, the RAID-1 is there for data safety (I'm too lazy with backups) and the last drive is a big one for recording TV. I've considered external NAS boxes, but...

Hi,
I'm in the same situation and I went for "fake motherboard RAID-1" (in my case nForce 4). Cheap, easy to replace if the motherboard goes up in smoke, very little config hassle.
Peter.

From suspension to standard... and back ?
Hi, I performed a computer upgrade this weekend and I removed my hard disk suspension. The system I was using was quite clumsy, using clothes elastic. I was using only 2 drives (Seagate 250Gb + Seagate 500Gb) so it worked for the time being. I had 2 elastics in a loop over the floppy drive cage and ...
