Re: Seasonic G360W gold for $60 - Review & Giveaway!
It looks like a decent power supply. I appreciate the 5 year warranty. However, it measured as being quite noisy, which is bad. I would prefer a power supply that use a flow-through design like the older antec earthwatts. I have an antec p-180 case, and there air has to make a 90 degree turn, from f...

Re: Silent Home Server Build Guide
Just because I felt like it, I decided to scrub my raid array.
I am 50% done, and it has taken 100 minutes.
So 200 minutes to scrub a 8 drive 750gb array is pretty decent.
This is with my phenom II 3 core processor.

Re: Silent Home Server Build Guide
I have an 8 drive raid-5 software array. When I built the array, it took roughly 4 or 5 hours to build. That was with a phenom II 3 core 2.6 or 2.8ghz processor. Build times of days might be possible with a *really* slow processor, but pretty much impossible with modern processors. I have all my per...

Re: Silent Home Server Build Guide
Is it worth moving to ECC RAM for this -- even tho this does not cover uncorrectable errors?
Actually, ECC will correct single bit uncorrectable errors. Chipkill will correct up to 4 bit uncorrectable errors. Of course, if you are getting uncorrectable errors it is time to R&...

Re: Silent Home Server Build Guide
For the people claiming Intel does not support ECC on non-Xeon CPUs: please do your research and make sure you're not confusing "fully buffered" with ECC in general.
I know about buffering and ECC. Buffering reduces the load on the data lines, and is used when there are lots of...

Re: Silent Home Server Build Guide
It is true that ECC ram isn't very expensive. I own 2 asus cur-dls mb's (dual pIII 933 with ecc), an intel sti-2 (dual pIII 1000 with ecc), an asus pc-dl (dual xeon 2.4 with ecc), asus ncch-dl (dual xeon 2.6 with ecc), and an intel pr-440fx (dual ppro 200 with ecc). Lately, for reasons that escape m...

Re: Silent Home Server Build Guide
The scores of folks who use an old P3 for a home file server certainly aren't using ECC memory, neither are ANY commercial WHS boxes from HP, Asus, etc, nor any commercial NAS boxes, even the multi-drive bay models that cost >$1000. Are they all wrong? Have they all suffered data los...

Re: Silent Home Server Build Guide
So what is the excuse not to use ECC? It is a home fileserver? Do memory errors avoid the home? It isn't an...

Re: Silent Home Server Build Guide
Two points: 1) If you have a 6 drive array, you really should have raid-5. It is free with linux, and if windows doesn't support it, then that is a good reason to avoid it. 2) You really need ECC memory. Since the motherboards listed don't support ECC, it rules them out, despite them being small, qu...

Overall a great review. One thing I disagree with though is: "One thought is whether the extra wiring and soldering between the two PCBs could cause current losses or voltage drops, compared to single PCB designs. Certainly, resistance would be lower with one PCB. " If the circuit board is for trans...
