Re: Silent Antec CHEAPly
My PC updates have certainly slowed down as my computing needs have nearly plateaued...it's just the occasional gfx card update for gaming..and moving to a 42" 2160p TV for a monitor. I don't think I could stand having a laptop for my primary display..or deal with it's noise. How are you getting on...

Thanks. Good to know. Some people seem to report problems with long-term reliability on Amazon reviews. Maybe I can find some reliable reviews somewhere.
Ooooor just go for an el-cheapo dock.

Cool, thanks. Yes, I saw lots of this type of models on Amazon. Did you ever have issues with disk-spinup? edit: I wonder, do you think the 12V supply could be replaced with a beefier version, should there ever be any issues with spin-up? I assume this would just be pass-through to the SATA power-po...

3.5" HDD dock - recommendation please
Hi folks,
I'm searching for an external SATA hard-drive dock (USB3), for backup purposes.
I'm slightly worried about power supplies being under-dimensioned to spin up some 3.5" drives.
Has anyone come across a good value-for-money version?
Cheers!

At least you won't have to heat that room in winter, hehe.
Fingers crossed that you don't have to change any components, because that would be messy.
How many times did you re-seat the coolers? I would have been paranoid about getting it as optimal as possible.

Is the saving of at best ~13-14W (assuming 3% at 450W) over a Gold really worth the loss of useful features?
During normal loads of around 100W this would only account to 2W (2%) difference anyways.

I agree with you on the software side of things. Though developers will always have to cut corners. It's the trade-off on whether you want incredibly fast vapourware (potentially economically not viable) or software. However, you talk about the average user a lot. The average user wouldn't dream abo...

Hmm, now I'm actually unsure. Turns out cheapish NVMe drives are still rare. Bummer.CA_Steve wrote:Go with the M.2 if you want to get rid of cables, don't have a 2.5" slot available, or have apps that can thrash the hell out of your storage and can make use of PCIe BW. So the deadline is drawing close. I'll probably will give it a shot, but I feel this would be a good time to also upgrade my systems drive. Any recommendations for a M2 250-500GB SSD for an Asus Z97 Pro? Or should I stick with SATA?

At home I don't see the point unless you have a large number of users and they are going to be using a computer most of the time. The one server would have to be an always on system so that means you're going to be burning through a lot of electricity, even if it is just idling. The setup in the vi...

LinusTechTips published this video "8 (or is it 10?) Wrong kind of friends? If I were to eliminate all people other than techies from having the potential to be my friends then I would have to eliminate 99.999% of humanity and about 90% of my family from consideration. No I mean, friends usually don't take the piss. And which case over-$200 should perform even better noise-wise, assuming that we stay with air cooling only? I doubt there is one. The FT's 180mm fans are just below the card(s). baii, might be a bad version. My U2711 doesn't hum and I always thought the backlight's brightness was voltage controlled, or least with a very hight frequency PWM signal.

Hi Andy,
Have you thought about bolting two smaller cases together? Then you could build two stacks of 6xHDs with the fans sandwiched between.
