Re: Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.C 1TB vs. WD Caviar Blue 1TB
Hitachi drives has a utility called a Feature tool where you can adjust AAM setting and also APM(advanced power management) settings. The default value for APM is highest performance setting, and as I recall, 7K1000.B drives shaved off a couple of watts when the APM setting was set to power saving m...

Re: Silent Home Server Build Guide
I have a quick comment on the backup addendum to the article. I'm not sure NAS devices or even external hdds are true back-up solutions especially is they're going to be always-on devices. As long as hard drives are turned on, there's always going to be a risk of failures and data loss. Of course, a...

FS: Ibase MB899 mini-itx Socket M motherboard with T2400 CPU
I have a motherboard and CPU combo for sale. The CPU is Core Duo T2400, and the motherboard is Ibase MB899 with 945GMEE chipset. It's a feature packed motherboard for mini-itx. It has 2 ethernet ports(1 10/100 and 1 gigabit), 1394, CF slot, etc.. You can view the whole specification at http://www.ib...

Good heatsink for i7 920 that is less than 150mm tall?
I just installed a i7 system in a 4u case, and I've found Mugen 2 I bought is slightly too tall for it. Apparently, most of the top reviewed coolers(u12p, TRUE, etc..) are all same or bigger sized than Mugen 2, and I was hoping if someone could suggest a good smaller cooler. I considered Kabuto and ...

If the main purpose of the server is as a file server, I'd recommend AMD solution because I'd highly recommend ECC memory for such environment and because ECC is much cheaper to implement with AMD monetarily and in power usage. I recommend ECC because I've found data integrity tends to deteriorate o...

I've always been curious, though: even if the BIOS doesn't explicitly support ECC, but the CPU does, what happens if you use ECC memory? Maybe it actually does "just work" behind the scenes? I found this page with some Linux ECC utilities (and I'd be surprised if something similar didn't exist for ...

I was also looking for boards with ECC support, and I found Asus is the only manufacturer that makes non-server boards with ECC support. It's good to know that the Biostar also supports ECC, but it seems it's the only one that has ECC support. I'm planning to go with nvidia 8200 because of their bet...

The PSU used is Antec MT300 that come in Minuet case. I don't think it has greatest efficiency, but the same system with GF8200 board(GA-M78SM-S2H) only drew 40W idle with same PSU. The CPU voltage was set at 1.1V, I think. It was the lowest I could take from BIOS, I believe. I measured the wattage ...

Anyone here own Foxconn or ECS 740g motherboards?
I just got a Foxconn 740g a74mx-k delivered and have a ECS A740GM-M coming for a couple of builds, and my Foxconn machine is compounding me a little. I just put together a quick build with 4850e, 2x2gb generic DDR2, 80gb 2.5 hdd, and nothing else, and the thing is idling at 55W or so. I know another...

Re: GA-MA74GM-S2 v DG45FC for basic file server
I would sell your CPU, get a E5200 and a G31, G33, or P35 motherboard. Like this one for $36 . Boy, am I cheap! Thanks for the reply. Do you know how much that board would idle with e5200? Going from the review here, DF45FC seems to be able to idle at 35W. Would that board idle under 30W? Actually ...

GA-MA74GM-S2 v DG45FC for basic file server
I gather these two boards are two lowest power consumption motherboards in each respective CPU platforms. I was hoping to get some help deciding with motherboards to go with in building a basic home file server that I might also use for mail and vpn server via vitualization. Right now I'm leaning to...

MSI k9AG Neo2 Digital + AMD be-2350
690g motherboard with CPU. I'm currently running them in my server at stock speed with 1v vcore. It runs about 60W idle, so it's not the lowest powered AM2 board, but it's fairly unique in that it's a full ATX board. It's also one of the few motherboards that can set the vcore as low as 0.8V in BIOS...

Anyone here run 940 Opteron servers?
I'm just wondering how much power they would consume. I'm considering building a home server with a 940 Opterons since I want PCI-X slots, and they seem to be one of the cheaper options. I just want to get an idea how much power they would consume so I can decide if they would be worth the extra pow...

Q on Ubuntu's S3 implementation
Firstly, I apologize if it's an inappropriate forum. Please move this topic to a proper forum in such case. I have a question for Linux gurus. I was giving Ubuntu a try as a home server OS, but I haven't found a solution to a issue. I had Ubuntu to go to sleep if inactive for 30 minutes, and it does...
