I have just come across this on the BBC website, thought it might be of some interest for folks here. It is still very much at the experimental stage, but it looks rather promising:

I'd buy my own confocal microscope and have it built for quiet usage. Our current setup is a pain in the neck, those damn lasers just need too much cooling. Sounds like an airport. edit: hmm a little off topic, I just realised. Maybe, but you talked about lasers, so you get massive bonus points for...

I would agree with widowmaker. There is no point in buying the "Extreme" version of any CPU unless you are going down the overclocking route, as the only difference (to my knowledge) is the unlocked multiplier. Anyone spending that much on a CPU is going to be looking at minimum at the Ultra 120 Ext...

Ultimate Silent PC
So, suppose that you've just won the lottery and can now build your ultimate quiet pc. What are you going to put in it?

Firstly, for those of you in the UK interested in a watercooled setup, the current edition of Custom PC has about 30 pages on watercooling in a mammoth guide. It covers everything from basics of setup, best practice etc (all the negative points mentioned by the OP are addressed and demonstrated how ...

I don't have a ruler handy, so I can't check, but do are all CPU sockets at the same place on an ATX motherboard? or do they vary like +/- 5cm? or more? Whilst I haven't checked every motherboard, I have built systems with a fair few, and I have never seen anything like a 5cm difference. I am prett...

I purchased a 420. It saddens me that Dell is removing their XPS line for Alienware. They aren't actually, The WSJ dropped a clanger there: http://www.custompc.co.uk/news/602574/dell-xps-brand-to-survive.html With regards to the cost of the 420, I am surprised you cannot build the system for less. ...

Maybe those crazy skull trail, quad sli, over clocker freaks might just be able to make a whisper quiet system after all. Now you have got me thinking. There is plenty of space to run 2 Ultra 120 Extremes, and if you were to SLI two of the silent Asus 9600GT cards, you could have the basis of a ver...

Then there's the weight problem that Zalman has apparently neglected. The article indicates as much. This PSU would bend the back panel of many cases (if it could even fit), and maybe warp the frame of the case. Zalman should at least mention this potential/real problem. It can be mostly solved wit...

Ah yes, the socket is a bit crucial  It will almost certainly be a 775 socket. The only low profile ones I have found are the flat Zalman flower ones: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=614467 These do seem to have a custom fan in, rather than just an affixed 120mm one...

I don't know about the specific heat output differences, but if you were to go with 2 x 2Gb you will normally be able to space them further apart, allowing for easier airflow (most matched pairs go in either slots 1 & 3 or 2 & 4, giving a gap). If you are sticking 4 x1Gb sticks in, the sticks in 1 &...

Low Profile Coolers
I am trying to find a quiet CPU cooler that is also low profile.
The only low profile ones I can find are rated at about 36dB, which is really rather loud.

I have had a good hunt over the site, but failed to find anything on getting quiet optical drives.
Does anyone have any recommended products at all?

Welcome to SPCR Jon! What did you do for cooling on the video card? Because of the issue of warranty, we decided not to change the cooler. This was one of the reasons why we went for the TJ-09 case, as it has a fan mounted right in front of the graphics card: http://www.silverstonetek.com/images/pr...
