Thanks very much, your replies convinced me that my boards probably support AHCI so I looked through their BIOS's again and found it under RAID settings (I hadn't thought to look there). It was set to IDE.

Thanks for the information. I ordered the same enclosure for my WD Scorpio recently, but was less than optimistic about being able to use it long term.
