Wonder if anyone has tried making their own rubber grommets etc for the older Icepaks. I've had a 300GB VR for about 18 months now, it sits loose in the Icepack with the torx screws removed - it got rid of the annoying whine. Tried screwing it back in the other day - the whine came back immediately....

Saw that A-Tech mount as well - I would imagine that with a Velociraptor attached (my main interest) it would vibrate like hell and be no better than the ice pack. The Scythe at least is plastic which may have a slight dampening effect, and I run integrated video and have heaps of space around the s...

Scythe Slot Rafter
Has anyone tried one of these yet? http://www.scythe-usa.com/product/acc/064/slotrafter_detail.html Basically a plastic mount that slips into a vacant PCI slot, and screws to the case, allows for the mounting of up to 4 x 2.5" HDD/SSDs, plus an optional pair of 80mm fans. Now for SSDs they would be ...

808GB version of this drive
There's a new drive as well: Western Digital Green 808GB WD8088AADS It's not in the list on the WD website, but searching for it found a page: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=613 I note that the AADS (<1TB) models have Read/Write|Idle specs of 6.0/3.7W, as opposed to the EADS mod...

Re: Buying new WD 1TB driver
Should I buy it? Yes. The "problems" with WD green drives failing early is pure conjecture at this stage - they appear to be one of the most reliable drives around if you go by forums etc. Don't think I've seen a reported failure yet. As someone asked in another thread, a particular thread title on...

WD enter SSD space
Western Digital have moved into the SSD space... via acquisition of SiliconSystems. Nothing exciting leaps out from the page.

WD release enterprise 2GB drive... RE4-GP with 64MB cache!
From the website... a 2GB version of the enterprise series of green drives: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=610 The cache has been boosted to 64MB, compared to the consumer 2TB green drive with "only" 32MB. RWIS is 6.8/3.7/0.8W, compared to the consumer drive's advertised consump...

Re: b Green Smart Article of Noise Reducing Computer Rack
tell me/us if you consider noise reduction to be "green" Absolutely not. The environmental message behind "green" is very widely accepted to ultimately boil down to sustainability and greenhouse gas emissions - whether it be through elimination of materials like mercury or lead from manufacturing p...

I use gkrellm - it's always open down the left side of my desktop for monitoring system temps etc. The neat thing is it's set up to graph read/write activity on each disk, so when I'm using RAID 5 goodness there's 4 graphs of read or write activity. If a drive fails, it will be visible. There's aler...

I have 3x slipstream 800 on case, two in front @ 9v and Exhaust @ 12v and 140mm YL 1000 RPM @ 7v on top. How do you find the slipstream fans? Very good temps - at ambient of 21C, my Q9550 idles at 32/32/30/30, usually hits 41 or 42 per core at 100%. Stock fan running non-PWM - it's a quiet fan by my standards (can't hear it over the Antec 300 tricools running on low). Even on PWM it cools fine, but I moved it to a non-PWM header to get so...

Can anyone tell from those pictures what the disk capacity is? I was looking at a Mini-box ITX case, but it only came with 40mm fans - you could do a lot with a 120mm or 140mm fan mounted directly above a motherboard in one of these cases if a designer applied themselves. A 140mm fan at 500 or 800rp...

http://www.mini-box.com/M350-universal-mini-itx-enclosure Anyone seen these in the flesh or bought one? IDE options for an OS drive
Kicking around the idea of an Atom based build... probably running Ubuntu. Most of the boards I've seen have an IDE connector and two SATA ports - with no onboard RAID. I would like to run RAID 1, so using Linux I can use mdadm for this - but I would need to install the OS on an IDE drive. I looked ...
