Re: Fractal Design Node Series HTPC Enclosures
I am chomping at the bit to get this case, so I emailed Fractal Designs about availability and got this response: The Node 304 should be available in the US at the end of September (MSRP $89.99) and the Node 605 will be available in October (MSRP $159.99). Both will be found at Newegg, NCIX.us, and ...

My observations: Antec NSK4482 vs Sonata Proto
I had to transfer my workstation from one case to the other recently. Power supply in the NSK went out soon after buying it - had to buy another power supply but the supplier didn't have another NSK, returned the NSK under warranty and got a Sonata and a GP-380. Same guts: Green Power 380 PSU, WD Bl...

I know what you're talking about. I had trouble with the TIM on my Gigabyte mobo. The chip was mirror-smooth but the paste still held strong! It was more like thermal epoxy than paste. I used 91% Isopropyl alcohol and a few razorblades. I *carefully* scraped it away with the blade. Keep the blade at...

I did not use the top vent because its really small and it would interfere with the airflow I have set up from front to back. I did not mention it in my post but I actually covered the vent so the fan wouldn't draw air from there and would pull stronger from the front. This is going to be in a cabin...

The way that the heatsink is mounted does not allow for any real tension against the cpu. It is screwed into a fixed-height platform. It is far from being the best performer. All of the dissipation is pretty much solely through those 3 heat pipes - no fins @ the base. But from what I've read, lots o...

You have the right idea. A 120mm fan at that position will cool all that just fine and probably do a much better job than your current setup, and silently. Just be careful -- if you upgrade the heatsinks you may need a slim fan. I would not advise removing the fan from the psu - that is just asking ...

You could also set up the NSK1380 with a heatsink like this http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=38787 and you could have 3 hard drives. But you'd still have to externalize the PSU. One other option would be to have 2 power sources -- one PicoPSU and then another brick with a molex c...

I am thinking you're gonna have to replace your hard drives. You could replace all your hard drives easily with one 1TB drive. The NSK1380 is a great case with a PicoPSU replacing the standard PSU (I am constructing a similar computer right now). I am a bit biased but I think its probably your best ...

the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 LP looks interesting but it looks like it sucks in from both sides. So I'm not sure how the ducting would work but its worth a try. What kind of heatsink are you using? The 41c (6c rise) and 24c (no rise) are low enough to not be problematic. The 91c on the cpu is the real problem -- so the problem is really getting heat away from your cpu. Depending on your setup you could try ducting to either feed it fresh air or make air esc...

In this thread, member RedAE102's friend has the same motherboard with a E8400, Velociraptor and Hitachi 500gb, Avermedia tv tuner, and has overclocked the gpu and a bunch of fans over my build, and his "max load" (GTA4 - admittedly not as strenuous as ...

Thanks for all the info doveman. If you'll let me pick your brain just a bit more.... 12v @ 8a is only 96 watts -- so why exactly do they advertise it as 150w? This is my favorite Thermal Paste article -- it is a 33 way comparison of all types of thermal paste. It has "Innovative Cooling 7 Carat Diamond" Thermal paste in it --- not sure if it actually has diamonds or not.

As far as I can tell, it looks like the 150XT still just uses the black and white leads going to a female barrel connector for power in. The 4pin connector on the Pico is probably a power out to the motherboard. I'm not sure if the DA-2 will even fit into the female end of the 8-pin EPS cable, but ...

@ ntavlas -- I chose 9400 mainly for the extra power - I figure I can underclock a bit to reduce the heat a little. The E5200 costs about the same as a 5050e, and can run just about* as cool - but is far superior on things like encoding. If I can be sure that I can do it, I am pretty set on the pico...

@ nutball: Just out of curiosity which low profile cooler did you use? I've been hearing good things about the Nexus LOW-7000 in conjunction with this board for low profile use, maybe you could try it out? I think ducting might be sufficient. I am not sure how the computer will act in an enclosed space, it will only have ~~2 inches clearance to push air enclosed on 5 sides. I'm debating going with a smaller case like the Microfusion but most reviews indicate that it is a pretty "loud" case and has 80m...

Video Card or IGP for Light/Casual Gaming
My wife's cheap freebie motherboard has died. I was thinking of upgrading her system and I need a video card or IGP that can occasionally play games at 1280x1024 like Sims 2 (and upcoming Sims 3), Spore, Second Life, WoW, Warcraft 3, etc. I was wondering if 780G or 790GX would be good enough? Or goo...
