Re: Back in the Fold

Welcome back! Well, first suggestion would be to get the new client, here's the installation instructions https://fah-web.stanford.edu/projects/FAHClient/wiki/ClientUserGuide#Windows although those are for windows, I'm assuming that's what you're running. The new client will allow you to control gpu...

Re: Mini ITX or Mini uATX case with 3x 5.25" bays

I have that Chenbro case, it's not too bad, although the fans in the back are not great. I replaced them, and it's ok now. I also cut a hole above the motherboard and stuck a fan above it, keeps the board pretty cool, so I don't need a tiny fan on the motherboard to keep it cool. The tricky thing ab...

Re: Cheaper systems

Let's see, I may be able to help on a couple of these: 1. Ignore the side intake fan for the moment. You don't have a big gpu in there, so nothing to cool with that. You may want to download SpeedFan or some other temperature monitoring software and check your temps to be sure. If the cpu is getting...

Re: Case recommendation with height constraint

Well yeah, the Fractal R3 is a much better case for a normal situation where you have decent ventilation on all sides. The problem that you mentioned, though, was that the Fractal R3 has the PSU vent on the bottom, and if you take the case feet off it's going to be a problem. Most cases that are goo...

Re: Case recommendation with height constraint

Huh, I think 46.5cm converts to 18.3 inches, and newegg lists the antec 300 height as 18 inches. Is there a different measurement somewhere else that leads you to believe it won't fit? As far as the top vent goes, you can block it, and probably block the side fan too. My real point is, a cheap case ...

Re: Case recommendation with height constraint

Yeah, you do really have a lot of options here. You may want to just optimize for airflow, with the height constraint you wouldn't want a lot of bottom to top flow, but it sounds like things are fairly wide open front to back. Most cases with front input fans aren't really optimized for silence, so ...

Re: New Machine - matx i7 build - comments and help welcome

Looks like a good list, the only thing I'd critique is the hard drive. In terms of reliability, the 2.5" drives I've had always seem to fail fairly badly, I'd be worried about using one as the main drive. The case should have enough room to mount a good 3.5" disk pretty quietly, get a WD green drive...

Re: Case recommendation with height constraint

Is it in something like a pillar? I have something like that, but I'm more constrained by width that height. Is your space wide enough for most cases? If you're looking for more suggestions, all 3 dimension limits would be useful.

Re: High Performance - Low Noise Case

I have a fortress, and it's a great case for cooling high powered systems. I have an i7 980x in it with dual gtx 460s, all OCed to various degrees, and it can keep them all pretty cool under load without a lot of noise. Of course, for your system I would ditch the V10, I've never read a review of th...

In other news, it sounds like AVADirect is going to try making quiet systems: http://www.anandtech.com/show/4487/avadirect-moves-to-silent-running I doubt they'll be as quiet as the Puget systems, but it sounds like they're going for lower price points. Re: SPCR Folds Team Blog

Hi all, have some terrible news. As reported here: http://en.fah-addict.net/news/news-0-368+bigadv-bonus-points-changes.php They're going to readjust bigadv points, so that they'll be worth less than they used to be. So all those big points any bigadv folders have been racking up are going to drop. ...

Re: Why do you have a SFF computer?

I got a little NAS case because I wanted something small that could hold 4 hard drives. SFF computers are great for places where you have a strong idea of a simple thing you want the computer to do, and you don't want it to take up more space than necessary.

Re: Can I have 2 video cards but only activate one of them?

Would a fairly standard SLI configuration be the way to go here? You can get a couple cards that run at about half what you need, adjust the fan speeds on both cards so that they run at low speed during non-gaming usage, and then let them speed up when you need to game. I have a couple of dual gtx 4...

Looks like you have a good set of components, but I'm curious about one thing. If you aren't planning to overclock, then why go with the i7 2600k? The i7 2600 should be marginally cheaper, and it won't have the unlocked multipler, so you won't be tempted to OC it. If you want to keep it as an option...

Re: Gaming Machine Slow Upgrade - CPU or GPU first?

With your requirements, the gpu upgrade might be overkill. A gtx 450 or 550 would probably work. Although, come to think of it, I have a couple spare gtx 260s in a box somewhere, would be happy to get a few bucks for one of them. Not sure what your power consumption is like now, you might need a PSU...
