Re: Is it possible to build a system w/ all digital VRMs?
Capacitors don't make any noise (except "boom" when they blow up). The noise you are talking about are from coils. And no, you can't avoid them.

Re: Xeon + ISK300 = winning?
My Xeon E3-1235 with 2x4GB RAM, P8B WS board (of course you will use a ITX board) and one SSD pulled 22W at idle and 106W at full CPU load (sorry, can't do the GPU load on the Linux). So 80W pico won't cut it, the original 150W PSU would be fine.

Re: Hardware for small, quiet home router/server
Requirement to have two ethernets on board came from size of nice case which i already have and want to use - only miniITX boards (and smaller) fits. If i use pci(e) slot with second ethernet controller i have no more slots to connect wifi card :( In that case GIGABYTE GA-C847N-D . Same 1.1GHz CPU ...

Re: Hardware for small, quiet home router/server
Is there a reason why do you require dual ethernet on board instead of putting one ethernet port on an addon board ? For example MSI C847MS-E33 is a mATX board with just one ethernet, but you can put an addon ethernet card there and voila - you have a low power dual core 1.1GHz Celeron, cooled passi...

Re: Noctua NH-L12-Very quiet, but not as effective as expect
What you are seeing is very likely the TIM IHS issue as mentoined in the answer from Noctua. Some people cut the IHS, replaced the TIM with different stuff and put the IHS back and they got 10-15C improvement at load. 60-65C is fine, Intel CPU has a 100C max temperature (and that throttle/shutdownte...

@Max_s: that was the case of the ASUS boards since... well i think forever, my S775 boards were the same - CPU fan only 4-pin, all chasis fans controlled together (3 or 4-pin fans), PWR FAN always 12V.

Re: Intel DQ77KB: A Low Power LGA1155 Motherboard
Of course it is very unrealistic that all drives will require that ~1.75A all at once (there will be minor time differences when the drives will start up), but it can happen all at once and in that case you could run out of power. Personally my server with 12 hard drives (WD greens and reds) runs up...

Re: Intel DQ77KB: A Low Power LGA1155 Motherboard
WD Greens use 1.75A as +12V at the startup. 5K4000 requires 1.2 (+5V) & 1.5 (+12V) . That means 2x1.75x12 + 2x1.5*12 = 78W / 6.5A are the startup requirements on the +12V line. Add to that around 20W on the +5V line, and you used around 100W just for the drives. Sure, it is only for a short period o...

Take that with a pinch of salt, the cycle scare reached FUD levels of paranoia. In my case as a desktop storage drive I use every day, the count is 88,817 - in 735,9 days of Power On Time, which comes to a little over 2 years non-stop. Hardly drive-breaking. :P Well, i started with 6 WD20EARS. I am...

Re: Scythe disappearing from US market?!
Scythe USA's parent company was some local American distributor. It is like for example Caseking.de would create a subsidiary for distributing Lian Li products and name itself Lian Li Europe and then this Caseking.de would go bankrupt - the parent company of Lian Li Europe would still be Caseking.de...

Both my 2TB Greens and 3TB Reds are quiet. Anyway, in your case i would buy WD Red for few simple reasons - no 8s sleep thingy causing hundreds of thousands load/unload cycles in few months and lower power consumption.

Look at the fan connector. On one side you will see 4 little metal pieces, one for each pin. Use something small to push one metal piece down. Pull the cable coresponding to that pin - and out it goes. Do this for the second one which you need to swap, out it goes. Now push the cable with the little...

Re: Your opinion on US gun laws under Obama.
There's a non linear growth that must be explained somehow. In US anyone over 18 can buy a gun. In most of the other countries, you need a gun permit which is usually linked with psychiatric check. That is the reason why do you have such big difference. In US it is harder to get beer than to get a ...

Postal service - here in Slovakia post in most cases don't even delivers the packages, they just leave you a note that your package is at post office. Re: Making a PC-Q08 Gaming PC more silent; which cooler fits
closed loop watercooling is the way to go, as far as i have read through the builds all over the net. Scythe Shuriken B could also work out well, but loses out to the Samuel in thermal performance. Scythe Kozuti and the Noctua NH-L12 with 92mm Fan only could probably work too. Closed loop is not re...

Re: Corsair AX 750 as good as AX 850?
My AX750 behaved exactly as my Seasonic X power supplies, including the fan "failure" in about 2 years (high pitch whine when fan starts up) and only minor buzz when you stuck your head next to PSU (impossible to hear from about 10-20cm distance).

Yes. Your PSU is painted with insulating color. Your case is painted with insulating color. Where would you expect the current to flow anyway in case of PSU failure ?Dave_G wrote:Am I being alarmist?

It is as much a marketing choice as when they removed floppy drives, serial/paralell/PS2 ports, slow removal of PCI slots... Optical drives are simply thing of the past. Sure, there will be conservatives who dislike the move to online digital media, but that doesn't change the facts, that less and l...

Maybe you don't understand it, but DVD/Blue Ray are things of past. Instead of a huge DVD drive they make the device thinner (Macbook Air, iMac, ultrabooks) or have better cooling/battery life/more stuff inside (Macbook Air, Mac Mini etc). You can disagree with them, but that won't stop them removin...

Well, P8H77-I means it has that off-center CPU socket location right next to PCI-E and memory slots. Considering that in Prodigy you have a lot of headroom, i can say that 1st gen Gelid Tranquillo was ok with the CPU fan blowing towards the PCI-E card on a ITX board with same CPU socket position wit...

Of course it works, both are 2-pin LED connectors. I use my power LED connector as a HDD LED on my Fractal Design Define R3. You will miss power LED of course that way, but if HDD LED is more important then you won't miss a always on power LED.

Re: Western Digital Red 3TB & 1TB Hard Drives
TLER is something which is relevant only when the hard drive is going bad. With no TLER, hard drive tries to recover the data in the bad sector and tries to move it to one of it's backup sectors. This can take seconds (if you are lucky), minutes or even hours. And during that time, your hard drive i...
