How I silenced a Dell U2410 monitor

At normal viewing distance, my Dell U2410 monitor is now completely silent at low brightness settings. I accomplished this by drastic surgery on the LCD panel casing. LONG VERSION ------------ The Dell U2410 24" monitor emits a loud hum when the brightness is set below about 78. Above about 83, it i...

Thanks, that looks like a good resource. It's funny I didn't get them with a Google search.

Where to buy silicone gel sheets?

I've been unable to find a place that sells small quantities in various thicknesses and durometers. I'm in the USA.

Playing silly buggers with the LGA1156

On an ATX board, you can mount a sizeable cooler atop the processor without crowding the neighborhood. I'm just now looking at an Intel DH57JG, though. I think this Mini ITX is pretty typical in having various objects planted within the space demarcated for the LGA1156. Some of them poke above the t...

Fan 1: Nexus 120 Silent Fan. ... Started having slight rumbling noise after 2 months of use. A month later the noise got suddendly really bad and had to replace the fan. SPCR sample of Noctua NF-S12 sounds strange

In the recordings of the Noctua NF-S12 , there is a pronounced sputtering sound. Could this be the result of the recording setup or maybe a bad sample? I don't hear that sound in other Noctua samples online. R6A5 Noctua NF-S12B Fan Test Round 4 - Noctua NF-P12 R5 Fan Test Noctua NF-P12 1300RPM R6A2 ...

Re: Zotac IONITX-P-E CULV Motherboard

With the new AMD Fusion boards coming out, I wondered how they would compare with the IONITX-P-E. The review at Tom's Hardware indicates that the Celeron SU2300 still gives you a faster and cooler system. However, the E-350 platform will have the advantages of choice (six so far) and price (eventual...

So far, I've found six boards to be released soon: ASRock E350M1 Asus E35M1-I Deluxe Gigabyte GA-E350N-USB3 Jetway NC85-E350-LF MSI E350IA-E45 Sapphire Pure White Fusion From the reviews, it seems the AMD E-350 systems are just slightly faster and cooler than Atom + ION, while having much slower 3D....

Re: Why are the Core i3/i5 considered low-power?

You can buy CULV cpus from newegg... Ah ha, I think you are thinking of the mobile version, not the CULV . For example, the i5-560M (2.66 GHz, 35W) is easy to find, but not the i5-560UM (1.33 GHz, 18W). I've looked for these CULV processors given with retail prices here , but couldn't find any sell...

Why are the Core i3/i5 considered low-power?

I frequently see people recommending an i3 or i5 for a low-power/heat system. But a Core i3-540 is 73W TDP. That sounds pretty toasty to me.

Also, as far as I can tell, none of the CULV processors are available retail.

Re: Best fan design for constricted airflow?

What is wrong with the stock fan? I'm not using a Lian Li PC-Q11; I just used it as an example. I would be interested in any pointers to description of the acoustics and airflow when the duct is shallower than the fan. I'm considering using a standard 120 x 25 mm fan with a duct that may be only 10...

Best fan design for constricted airflow?

If you have a vent configuration such as in the Lian Li PC-Q11, where a large fan faces a wide, shallow duct running perpendicular to the axis and only to one side, what fan design would give the best dBA/CFM? Should the blades be close, as with the Nexus and Scythe, or open like the Noctua? How qui...

120mm fan for horizontal use?

The 120mm size has gotten a lot of attention on SPCR, but I still need some input regarding horizontal use. Y'know, compared to vertical, noises and wear are different. I need one 120mm for a top-mount case fan and it looks like either Noctua or Nexus would be best. That still leaves a few models to...

Ideas for cooling in Habey cases

The Habey EMC-800 and EMC-600 aluminum Mini-ITX cases are classy, sturdy, and relatively inexpensive when you consider the included PSU. They seem just about perfect for an Intel Atom or AMD Fusion system. The problem with them is that there is precious little provision for cooling. I've been lookin...

Re: Seasonic X-400 Fanless for a low-power system?

For your system, it is such an overkill tho. I've read your very informative reviews of these PSUs. The thing that interests me about the SilverStone ST45NF is that while it is less efficient than the Seasonic X-400, you report that it is significantly cooler. That shouldn't be, but there it is. Re: Seasonic X-400 Fanless for a low-power system?

If you have 3 other noise sources already, then there is NO benefit whatsoever to going fanless. Ah...I didn't realize the components I chose would already raise the noise level that much. So I guess that makes this question moot for my current project. Still, I'd like to hear anything on Seasonic ...

I just googled APEX MI-008 and a ATX power supply won't fit in that case. I'm looking at the Lian Li PC-Q07 and the Apex MI-008 because those are the smallest cases I could find with 2 x 3.5", 1 x 5.25". I know the Apex takes an SFX PSU and have also been looking for the quietest SFX. It seems ther...

Re: On/off switch for internal drive?

My best suggestion would be to put the hard drive in an external case with a USB connection, and then you turn it on when you want it, and you eject it before turning it off. I agree that using an external drive would be the safest from the perspective of mounting/unmounting. I've seriously conside...

Fanless PSUs are not all alike with regard to heat and sound. There have been several mentions in this forum of buzzing with the Seasonic X-400 . I'm concerned with how much of an issue that might be at the low power loads I'm expecting. Also, I'm concerned about relative ventilation needs. I've als...

Seasonic X-400 Fanless for a low-power system?

I'm looking to build a low-power system (Intel Atom, 2 x 2.5" HDD, 1 x ODD) and for the case am leaning toward either the Apex MI-008 or Lian Li PC-Q07. I plan to use a Scythe Quiet Drive for the OS HDD and either a Noctua or Nexus Real Silent for a case fan if needed. For the PC-Q07, the X-400 appe...

On/off switch for internal drive?

I would like to use one internal HDD just for backups, having it spin-up only when needed. It appears that the most convenient way to prevent unwanted spin-up is to keep the HDD unconnected. To avoid having to fiddle inside the case every time, is there a convenient device to allow an external on/of...
