Opinions on best cooler for i7-4790k?

I need one a quiet as possible, but hopefully as small as possible. Meaning I don't want a huge monster that blocks RAM, PCIe slots, and so on. Any suggestions?

Re: PSU recommendations?

Can anyone suggest a budget-friendly and quiet PSU (350 to 450 watt) that fits a micro-ATX case? Which are your complete specs? The specs are being fine-tuned as needed, so nothing is set yet, but as of today complete specs are: CASE: HEC Compucase 7K09BBA30FNRX CASE FAN: Noctua NF-R8-1800 CPU: Int...

Re: PSU recommendations?

Perhaps the $40 Seasonic SS-300TGW or for $15 more, the modular SS-350TGM. Both are available at NewEgg. Here's the 5yr old review . Thanks for the tip! I will look into the SS-350TGM. I just did a tour of a couple power supply calculators that said I need 250 to 300 watt, so the SS-300TGW is too c...

Re: CPU cooler recommendations for DIY router?
As noted in your other thread, there's no mechanical data for this case. You'll need to measure the clearances. Or, better...just try the i3 with the stock cooler using mobo fan firmware. You aren't going to stress the CPU...chances are the stock cooler fan can just idle along.[ Pl...

Re: PSU recommendations?

Not much on the way of specs for that case on their website...or anywhere on the web for that matter...looks non-optimal from a cooling perspective... The included PSU is TFX form factor....not sure if you can fit an SFX PSU in there...you better measure the space and mounting area to see if SFX wi...

Can anyone recommend a quiet CPU cooler for core i3 (54watt) that will fit an Apex DM-317-A case, without blocking any RAM or PCIe slots?

Apex DM-317-A is the case, but I'll be ditching its included power supply. Right now I'm liking the Corsair SF series SF450.

Re: DIY router help?

Okay, so I finally decided to go with a Gigabyte GA-B85M-DS3H-A and a core i3-4160 CPU. Everything I have read suggests this is more than enough to get at least 900Mbps, so I'm ready to buy. I have also found that the SSD problem appears to have been solved in pfSense, so I'll be looking for Intel s...

Re: DIY router help?

Here's what pfsense recommends for h/w. Yes, I saw it before when I was going to buy SG-2220. Their store is deceptive, intentional or not. After lots of research, I still don't know for sure if SG-2220 will reliably do gigabit speed. Opinions on their forum are split. Most agree that SG-2440 will,...

Re: DIY router help?

So, why fixate on a high power CPU to do a task that an Atom can easily do? Get the Zotac Zbox or similar and an external ODD. Been told on a couple forums now that if I absolutely want to guarantee this build can handle gigabit throughput, I need a four-core CPU with minimum 3.4GHz. Had been going...

I've had to reformat your post as SPCR doesn't allow more than three quotes in a post... all that work copying, pasting and editing "

" for nothing. 1. Re: DIY router help?

What's wrong with buying a normal router? I can't understand spending this kind of money for a home router if it is then going to sit right next to your bed but I suppose we must have very different priorities. So far as I can tell, most namebrand routers have backdoors, and all those wired-only ro...

Re: DIY router help?

Is this just a router/firewall or also some kind of NAS (needed the HDD)? I sold my Zotac Zbox Nano to a friend for him to use as a pfsense based router. Don't think you need more horsepower. This year's model has two 1Gb NIC ports. It'd be hard to find a more power efficient or quiet way to build ...

Re: Cooling advice needed

The Titan Twin Turbo VGA Cooler was what I wanted, but its proven too elusive, so need something to work with the 6800GT that I can actually track down. It's probably more an issue of the amount of money you really want to spend. For example there is on eBay UK currently the Gigabyte passive cooled...

Re: Cooling advice needed

40mm fans won't make for a quiet system. Perhaps if you post more specs and maybe photos we can advise better. For the 6800GT the Accelero S3 will be able to work passively without a problem if the bolt pattern matched. The S1 fitted fine so the S3 should be OK. Otherwise, getting a CPU cooler and ...

Re: Cooling advice needed

I can't recommend spending more money to mess with an ancient 6800GT. It's Passmark score is 139. In comparison, Intel's HD 3000 integrated GPU in the old Sandy Bridge CPU has a score of 312. So, nearly any integrated gpu in a CPU built in the last 4 years is better than this 6800GT. If you don't h...

If you looking for good value, performance and quiet operation, then look into Thermalright HR02 Macho and Scythe Mugen 4. The Thermalright looks to be as gargantuan as the three I was considering: Noctua NH-D14 Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO Zalman CNPS10X I found complaints on all three either not f...

Probably better to stick with a single thread. Please note this parts-list is tentative. I'm still trying to iron out the wrinkles, trim the fat, make sure there are no incompatibilities, and ensure this build will run all (or most) of the legacy distro releases I want to test drive. *CPU- Phenom I...

Re: PSU recommendations wanted

Would be best for you list all the components, a lot of the online calculators tend to overvalue a lot, unless you are doing heavy overclocking and mulitple gpus you should be fine with 500W or even less (depending on the components). Personally i wouldnt go with Corsair TX series if your goal is a...

I'm nearing completion of parts-list for my upcoming build, and ran the tentative list through couple of power supply calculators, which came up with 650w & 675w. I'd like to get PSU slightly stronger-say in the 700w to 750w range. I'm thinking of the Corsair TX750 (750w) model, but would like to he...

Re: RE: cases & maglev fans

Why these fans in particular? There are many different bearing designs out and typically it is not bearing noise that is dominant in good quality fans. Neither the Sunon fans nor Enermax fans you refer to are exactly the best known for silence and you will not find them ready fitted to quiet cases....
