Re: Elastic suspension: Still getting loud seek noise?
Heh, I wish  I'd probably take a pretty big hit if I tried selling it, given that SSHDs didn't take off that well, and its not even laptop sized. My plan is to just use the 240GB as a 64GB cache for Windows (because of the limitations of Intel's SRT), and the remainder as a cache for linux. Th...

Re: Elastic suspension: Still getting loud seek noise?
Okay, I did do the SMART tests and everything came up okay. I did originally decide on the SSHD because I didn't want to commit to an SSD, but it turns out I'm getting a 240gb Intel 530 SSD for christmas anyway. I may just shelve the SSHD or just power it on when I need it, but it seems like a waste...

Elastic suspension: Still getting loud seek noise?
Hello all, I recently picked up a 1TB 7200RPM Seagate SSHD, as I was running out of space. My original 500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 was essentially inaudible over normal background noise, but this new drive is ridiculously loud. It reminds me of the old 40GB IDE monsters that you could hear throu...

Re: 55C idle with Mugen 3 and Intel i7-4770K
You didn't tell us how you obtain the temps. If the temps were at 100° C, you should either observe throtteling or shutdowns. If you do not have any throtteling, then your temp readings may be way off. Sorry, I didn't know to provide this info. Yes, I did observe throttling down to about 2.5ghz (my...

Okay, so running prime95 caused it to shoot up to 100C almost instantly. So now I'm pretty sure its the heatsink contact.

Re: 55C idle with Mugen 3 and Intel i7-4770K
Okay, I'm seeing 46C now at idle, measured with RealTemp. I've never known AS5 to improve that much, that quickly due to burn-in, but my knowledge is admittedly a bit out of date. Is 46C idle to be expected of these chips, do you think? Edit: While RealTemp is showing temperature at 46C, it shows "d...

55C idle with Mugen 3 and Intel i7-4770K
So I just upgraded from an i5-2500K to the i7-4770K, and my normal idle temps with a Scythe Mugen 3 (and Arctic Silver 5) are about 55C according to the BIOS, which seems way too high. The motherboard is an Asrock Z87 Pro3. I'm not sure if I messed up with the artic silver application (I've done it ...

Thanks everyone for your help! I ended up just zip-tying a 120mm antec tri-cool onto the heat sink. No noticeable temp difference but it's much quieter now.

True, I'll try that. I might go for a fanless cooler if I can find one for the 460. Apparently it doesn't hare the same holes as the GF100 chips.frenchie wrote:Probably not, but maybe it would be enough to run the card fan at 20% even at load ?

Re: Queiting PNY GTX460 XLR8
Okay, thanks. I tried afterburner and it keeps it nice and quiet at idle, but even at 30% it becomes really loud. It's just the pitch of the sound, it makes you tense up and think "turn it off! turn it off!" The thing is, I got it recertified on newegg for $125, and there's no way I could get anothe...

what is your fan/case setup ? Antec 900 with 2 stock 120mm tri-cool LED fans in the front, 1 in the back, and a non-LED 200mm at the top. Queiting PNY GTX460 XLR8
I just bought this card off newegg to replace my old hd4650 (which was completely inaudible, probably because it drew less power than the southbridge haha), and damn is it ever loud! Is there anything I can do to quiet it down a bit? I'm pretty new to this. I suppose I could take a 120mm off the fro...

Yup, it's a tricool 200mm with no LED. So far I've always had it on low. I don't think I can even reach that stupid little switch haha.dhanson865 wrote:It's a tricool 200mm. Does it vibrate noticeably on low or just when on medium and high?
Should I maybe try oiling it?

Re: Any way to balance a 200mm top fan in my Antec 900?
If it's vibrations then a softer mounting is the way to go in order to reduce and hopefully quiet down the noise. Unless the noise is really a ticking or grinding noise from the fan motor, or such strong vibrations that it might suggest that the fan is really going bad. Also, disconnect or carefull...

Any way to balance a 200mm top fan in my Antec 900?
Title says it all pretty much. To my ears my setup is more than quiet enough, but the only annoyance so far is that the 200mm fan at the top of the case seems to be off-balance, vibrating slightly. How would I go about balancing it? I really don't want to buy another fan, I already dropped enough on...

Re: Intel Haswell CPU - a Quantum Jump in CPU Performance?
Even "Core" (non-2 from Jan 2006), is not so slow that normal people notice. Give them a SSD with that Core computer, and they will think it is a new super-fast machine. Amen to that. The only reason I invested in a core i5 2500k (currently en route from newegg) was for scientific computing (I'm a ...

If they have them planned, doesn't that kind of imply that they already know they'll be able to shrink the dies? And why would you risk messing up a perfectly working CPU just to get at best 5-10c advantage ? Hahaha you're talking to the wrong guy here. I only asked because the last time I did something like this was with an athlon 64 X2, in which the heat spreader was not soldered to the CPU die at all. I wo...

Re: Overclocking -- Concern about Northbridge -- Watercool i
You would think that with northbridge chips doing less and less actual work these days (they no longer house the memory controller, and more recently the integrated graphics), they would produce less heat relative to their speed.

Removal of heat spreader for better cooling performance?
I think a lot of things late at night, but lately I've been wondering: What if you removed the heat spreader on a modern CPU so that the die(s) made direct contact with the heatsink, just as we all used to do back in the good old days? There could be an issue of excess weight on the die, but with a ...

Yes, but can you get better single-thread performance going from 4 cores to 2 cores, as you apparently can going from 6 to 4? that's a good question! I'm not familiar with it, but if you check what people have been able to achieve with let's say the Phenom II X4 955BE versus the Phenom II X2 550 BE...

I was just thinking, wouldn't a thicker fluid like maybe some good old 10w30 be able to absorb more heat and thus not need to circulate as fast as your typical water-based setup? Or would it not absorb heat quickly enough?

As soon as I saw your post I immediately thought of bad capacitors. They often make that kind of whine when they blow (think hotdogs in the microwave). Even if you have solid caps on your board, the smaller sized caps are usually still electrolytic because solids don't come in capacities that small....

I looked into this a while ago when a friend wanted to upgrade his CPU on a 690G mobo. It should work, but you will need to update to the latest BIOS first (before you put in the AM3 CPU). I had no problems putting an AM3 quad-core phenom into an Asus M2A-VM HDMI mobo. To be fair, I only tried it b...
