Re: Help choosing a PSU

OK the PC works! And the PSU is silent, completely silent for me so far as I can tell. I can't even get it out of fanless mode by running Prime95 on all 4 cores for 5-10 minutes. For reference I am running on integrated graphics at the moment and my CPU is an i5-3750k, overclocked by 900MHz. Nothing...

Re: Help choosing a PSU

Thanks for the info yakuman, I have a similar setup in that I have a Fractal Define R4 case. Anyway, I've gone for the RM550x (2018), I'll try and report back here how it performs when I get it. That is if my mobo/CPU aren't fried from the previous PSU's failure, in which case expect a somewhat long...

Re: Help choosing a PSU

Thanks for the replies, I'm leaning towards the Corsair RM550x 2018 now, I'm liking the 140mm fan on that one and I've also read that Corsair tend to put a little more focus on quiet operation. Also, I'm not sure how much credibility Lambda noise ratings have, mainly because I only found out they ex...

Help choosing a PSU

Hi, looking for a new PSU for my five year old near-silent build as the current one is broken. Currently I have it narrowed down to either a Seasonic SSR-550FX, Silverstone ET-550-HG or a Corsair RM550x. Anybody know what the quietist one of those with the least possibility for coil whine is likely ...

Silencing a monitor on a Linux distro

Firstly I'd like to say a big thank you to this web site, the information and recommendations here have allowed to me to succesfully build a very quiet PC. So quiet in fact that the loudest noise is now coming from one of my monitors. I read this article about monitor noise: http://www.silentpcrevie...

Re: Need Recommendations for 250-320GB HDD

If you don't have enough money for a 250G SSD but want decent performance, I recommend the combination of a cheap SSD + a cheap HD. Sorry for the delay in reply on this, thanks very much for the recommendations, I think I will buy a cheap, quiet 2.5" HDD like the WD Scorpio Blue. If I feel like I n...

Re: Need Recommendations for 250-320GB HDD

Thank you for the replies, very much appreciated. I have been doing some more research and having another fairly good think about things. Firstly, the recommendations above are excellent ones based on my original question and I'm sure that for the right machine, the WD Scorpio Blue 500 GB is a very ...

Need Recommendations for 250-320GB HDD

Hi, sorry for posting another "could somebody please recommend" thread but I'm struggling to find reviews for some of the smaller capacity drives about at the moment, particularly that place any emphasis on noise. I need something reasonably cheap (which obviously rules out SSD) as its looking like ...
