Varies by DIMM but DDR3 will use 1-2W per DIMM. Peanuts compared to the rest of a typical system.
And that's per stick so two 8GB sticks are more efficient than 4 4GB sticks of you want to keep the power as lower as possible.

Re: Is anything missing from my shopping list?

The other power saving is the case fan. It won't go below 800 rpm. I suspect that most of the time it could be off completely. Of which fan are you talking? Sorry, the front case fan (which is the only one in the system now I've got a PicoPSU installed). I've just ordered and fitted a Phobya G-Sile...

Efficient 12v brick in the UK?

I've just ordered a 90W picopsu to replace my horribly noisy FP 1U PSU. However I'm struggling to find an efficient power adapter to go with it. As the server will be on 24/7, I do want to keep things as efficient as possible. 80w will be more than enough for my set up but all the ones I've looked a...

Re: Is anything missing from my shopping list?

Right, everything has turned up and its ll built. There's certainly no shortage of space in the case which is nice. Power consumption is 4 watts when powered down but plugged in (presumably that's the IPMI interface still doings its stuff). With one 2.5" SATA drive installed, idle power was 19 watts...

Re: Is anything missing from my shopping list?

Well I've ordered it all. I went with 2x Kingston 4GB EEC 1.35v RAM in the end as that's what popped up on the compatibility chart, though I suspect 8GB is a bit excessive. I'll let people know how noisy the PSU is what the the power consumption is like once it's all together.

Re: Is anything missing from my shopping list?

Has that server to be quiet? Yes - I forgot that bit in the original message. It'll be going in the loft room which is use as my daughter's TV, homework and general hangout room so it doesn't need to be silent but it needs to pass the quietness test of an 11 year old girl. A gentle hum of fans is ok.

Is anything missing from my shopping list?

As discussed over at the mobo forum , I' building a server to replace by defunct Synology NAS. If people would like to review my shopping last and suggest any improvements or anything I've missed out, it would be appreciated. My aim is to build a server with low idle power consumption and plenty of ...

Re: Has any used a Supermicro Atom C2000 based motherboard?

I have the 8-core mini-ITX version of that board (A1SAi-2750F) in a server. Love it. Its sitting in a SuperMicro 1U case with 4 hotswaps. Running Hyper-V server 2012 R2. Works great. Runs the fans in the case nice and slow. Not silent, but quiet. Plenty of horsepower for my needs (which include run...

Re: Has any used a Supermicro Atom C2000 based motherboard?

A Supermicro board seems to fit piglover's requirements but not yours. You apparently have no need for anywhere as much processing power at this point True but I suspect I will in due course. eg there's some software development I've got in mind that it might get used for. I might be getting CCTV i...

Has any used a Supermicro Atom C2000 based motherboard?

I am thinking of using https://www.supermicro.co.uk/products/motherboard/Atom/X10/A1SAM-2550F.cfm in a build a home server and would like to know if anyone else has used one and if so how they found it. In particular, was passive cooling ok for the PC or did you need to add a CPU fan? As a bit of ba...

Re: New build components - comments needed

Have fun with your build. As I've got this built, I thought I'd let people know how I got on in case anyone else is searching a similar combo. I ordered the parts from Amazon, Ebuyer, Scan, Overclockers and Silent PC. All the orders turned up before midday the following day so I can't complain abou...

Re: New build components - comments needed

I think the NoiseBlocker m12-s2 is a great fan, but i would go with S1 ... or another Scythe Slip Stream 120mm x 25mm PWM Mid Speed Fan - (SY1225SL12LM-P) could be an option, as it will match the CPU fan, and since its pwm it could be controlled the same way as the cpu fan (depending on the mobo). ...

I didn't realise that, definitely no need for a sound card then.

Re: New build components - comments needed

Thanks for those replies - very useful. I agree about the graphics card being over specced and PSU (just me being greedy I guess). Now I've done yet more reading, I think I'll for an Asus GTX 660 TI and the Season x-400 fanless cpu. As the PSU is fanless I'll add the second fan to the case so I migh...

New build components - comments needed

I'm new to silent pcs, or building PCs at all, so I suspect it is better to ask for comments in here. Be gentle with me! As I'm moving house soon, my other half has said I can use the "family room" as a game/media room, which clearly means buying a new PC. As I'm on gardening leave at the moment, I'...
