Re: Why are people talking about 120mm fans still? curious
My very personal opinion is that usually 140mm fans don't sound as smooth as 120mm ones, and when they sound that good, they will not move that much air (I mean, much more than a good 120mm fan). Besides currently there are also very few 140mm fans which can go enough low (more often they bottom at...

Re: Quiet Mini-ITX Gamer Build Guide
Mike, it's fantastic to see these new build articles on the site - and the noise levels you were able to obtain. Two questions: 1. What was the system power consumption under load? 2. Regarding removing the dust filter from the side panel - would having a larger opening with filter over it make up f...

Re: Real expereinces w/ GTX-750ti -- quiet?
I've got the low profile Gigabyte 750Ti (GV-N75TOC-2GL) and when surfing the web etc it's inaudible. Under any load however the fan noise is far higher than I want. Connectivity on the card's great, but sadly I am returning it and getting the ASUS STRIX 750Ti, as I can only see this low profile card...

Reading back through the thread, is there any reason to recommended something other than the Corsair RM450 for the OP? It looks like it'd do everything required.

Re: PSU for upcoming Broadwell build
One reason for fewer PSU reviews at SPCR recently is that the PSUs themselves have become so consistently quiet (and generally, way better than any computer needs them to be) at low-to-mid loads that the incentive isn't that strong anymore. The other thing is that even though I pioneered the practi...

Re: PSU for upcoming Broadwell build
Just as an example, the Cooler Master V550S-M 550W at 25W (the power level around any modern Haswell idle) is much more efficient than the Enermax Triathlor ECO 350W ( 81-82% vs 68-69%, while the RM450 is around 73%). That's fascinating! Where do you find this out? This post has been the most helpf...

Re: Power/Quiet PC Build Advice
Time for an update. I RMA'd the Silverstone ST30SF on the advice of Silverstone themselves - it was clearly faulty. Which was a shame as it's a nice size, though the fan was surprisingly noisy. Over the summer the computer lived in a cardboard mockup case pending a Lone Industries L2, powered by a 9...

but i would love to see manufactures give samples to SPCR specially since they are building semi passive GPUs. If we pester the manufacturers (on Twitter, by email) asking them to donate to SPCR, we have much more chance of SPCR getting samples, because it shows the manufacturers there is demand. I...

Re: Lone Industries Mini-ITX prototype
Screw-in standoffs aren't an option, as the threads would protrude into the side panel. They would also require threads. In addition to the standoffs, there are 13 (14 for L2) steel nuts used for threads. I'm curious, how do your steel fasteners work as standoffs? The need for screw-in standoffs ha...

Thanks - I am hoping that what little it shifts will be better than the 50-54mm fan on the new Gigabyte low profile GTX 750, and the noise also more pleasant.

Re: The monochrome world of Noctua's redux fans
Has anyone got a comparison of how these sound and perform compared to the standard Noctua fans? To my eye they have a different blade design which should affect things, so curious how the 140mm fans stack up against http://www.silentpcreview.com/140mm_Fan_Roundup1

Slim 80mm fans?
Can anyone recommend a slim 80mm fan that will run quietly when undervolted and still shift some CFM? The fans will be mounted horizontally (air blowing bottom to top of case). Normally I'd reach straight for a Noctua, but they don't have anything that thin. The case is similar to the Lone Industrie...

Re: Power/Quiet PC Build Advice
I have successfully completed a 40 minute run of Prime95 in Blend mode and the fan profile has kept the cores to 71 degrees and below, which is an improvement over earlier on. The motherboard has an excrutiating high-pitched squeal/whine under load - I don't know how to describe it, except like fing...

Re: Power/Quiet PC Build Advice
I'm not sure about what you're saying, but that PSU should be dead silent, so, if it makes some odd noises, maybe you should return it. Yes I agree. The noise has settled down to be a steady 50Hz or 60Hz 'clicking' away. I need to wait until I turn off my other computers to see how noisy it is, but...

Re: Power/Quiet PC Build Advice
Well the parts have all arrived (sans case) and I've assembled the system on my desk to see what I think of the HD4600. First impressions are how quiet it is; the ST30SF is making odd cracling noises but I hope these will cease as it beds in. The Scythe fan has a tick and runs slightly off-true (loo...

I wish they would make a sleek minimalist fortress version. A nice clean aluminum version of this would make a perfect HTPC/Steambox. This one is too gaudy for the wife though. I think this is coming - they showed off the FTZ01 recently, which has an aluminium body. There's also mention of the ML08...

Any particular reason why you going with the Z97 instead of the H97? feature wise they are very similar, if you are not overclocking i would go with the Asus H97I-PLUS Motherboard . WiFi is the only reason. If I decide I don't want that, I'll get the H97. Apart from saving £10, is there any benefit...

Re: Power/Quiet PC Build Advice
I don't have any definitive, objective reason (even if I have some doubts about starved airflow and heat build up), but as I can't stand overcrowd environments, personally I would go for a Silverstone 300W SFX unit. Thanks - to address your doubts about airflow and heat build up, that'd be a differ...

Well I've been all round the houses with this build! I'm going to try the IGP and add a graphics card later if I nee...

tim851 is correct - I raised this with Mini-Box and they said: The 12V rail from the picoPSU cannot hold both the CPU and the mentioned video card. Keep in mind that the 12V rail has to power other components too. Your described setup will work well without the video card. Which is understandable, t...

Re: Advice needed - reasonably small PC with graphics card
Hi gaidal, I missed you'd posted photos! I'm impressed with the build though not enamoured with where the PSU goes - I'll definitely go for a slightly larger case to make it easier (I was thinking PicoPSU but it seems like I'd be too close to the edge). A question about the On-board graphics: the AS...

Hypothetical question: could this build be powered off a PicoPSU?
They have a 160W PicoPSU version available (with a 200W peak, whatever that means).
