Photoshop spins up HDD for no reason
My E drive (used for backups only) goes to sleep soon after I boot in the morning, and generally stays asleep until I run a nightly backup on shut down. But every time I open Photoshop (CS5 Extended), my E drive wakes up - even though Photoshop is set ONLY to use my D drive as its scratch disk. I re...

WDEARS is "playing" seek noise through my headphones
Just when I thought I'd hit a sweet spot! I've recently swapped my main storage drive from an F3 to a WDEARS. The F3 is still connected, but is asleep most of the time (backup drive). I've had a couple of good days with the WD as my temp/storage drive, but have just put my headphones on (plu...

Re: Advice/Help/Ideas on New Build
Your setup looks very similar to mine (in terms of cooling requirements). Add an extra $60ish for a decent heatsink and some fans while you're at it. The R3 fans are nearly OK. But for $15ish each, a pair of SlipStreams will make a big difference. $33 Hyper 212+ > http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php...

You wrote, "I've got an F3. And it's probably the noisiest thing in my case right now." Which bit is the noisiest you're referring to? In your first post you wrote: HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F3 If you don't already have the F3, and don't need the speed, then I'd look for something else. The F3 is a qu...

Moving Flash player cache into RAM to stop drive spinning up
- Firefox using RAM for cache - Windows running on SSD - Windows TEMP directory located on Spinpoint F3 This works really well for silent browsing, which is the only time I really want silence. The Spinpoint spins down, and stays down, until... Flash uses the Windows TEMP dir as a cache. So as soon ...

Re: Advice/Help/Ideas on New Build
What will you be using the computer for? I've got an F3. And it's probably the noisiest thing in my case right now. I've just recently put in a WD Green WD10EARS 1TB as a backup, and although it's not silent, it's a little bit quieter than the F3. I'm planning on suspending the F3, and trying to kil...

Re: Nexus or Scythe 120mm fans?
With the R3 exhaust fan gone, I can now hear a very faint tick/thud from the Real Silent on my CPU. I think I'm going to have to buy a PWM Slipstream for my CPU next. I just spent 20 minutes trying to track down a 'new' high frequency hum. It's my monitor. I guess it's a sign of progress when the mo...

Re: Nexus or Scythe 120mm fans?
I've just installed a Slipstream 800, and my first impressions are that it's MUCH quieter than the Real Silent. Pity about the ugly leads though  I have the Real Silent running on my CPU heatsink at 35%+Speedfan, and the Slipstream as an exhaust running off the R3 fan controller (on 100%), an...

Re: Nexus or Scythe 120mm fans?
it's a virtual tie between the Real Silent and Slipstream for ultra-quiet. I've got a Real Silent on my CPU heatsink (running at 35%), which I'm very happy with. I was going to buy another Real Silent to use as an exhaust, but I might try a Slipstream after reading that. They're both pretty much th...

Re: SSD + data drive question
as fumino said.
But, you'll probably want to move a lot of temp/scratch/cache files off the SSD and onto the HDD - which depending on what you use your PC for, will mean your HDD stays awake most of the time anyway.

Re: Fractal R3 and the stock Fans...
I'm running one of the R3 case fans as an exhaust (turned right down using the R3 controller), and it doesn't really bother me.
I CAN hear it, but only if I get off my chair and listen for it - my PC is on the desk right next to me.
My drives are louder.

Re: Case recommendation. Tempted to get Fractal Design Defin
I've just built a new PC using an R3 (see this thread ), and I'm very happy with it. I haven't really got anything to compare the R3 to in terms of silence, but it's a well thought out case, and very easy to work with. I read a few reviews that suggested that the build quality wasn't brilliant, but ...

Re: Fractal Design Define R3 - fan placement?
1) Are you using any kind of enclosure for your Spinpoint? I am having problems with 7200 RPM HDD noise coming from my R3. I just installed my old 500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200 to the R3, and while I was at it, I loosened the mounting screws (as far as I dared) on the Spinpoint. It has reduced the H...

Re: Fractal Design Define R3 - fan placement?
1. The Spinpoint is mounted conventionally, and DOES hum. If I press on the rails a little bit, or pull it out of the cage completely, it goes away, so I'll probably end up suspending it. Seek sounds are audible, but it doesn't really bother me. I do have a lot of foam lying around at the moment tho...

All done! * CMX8GX3M2A1333C9 works fine with the GA-P55A-UD3 * SSD is insanely fast - but I'll have to figure out a TrueCrypt workaround (I'm used to full system drive encryption) * F3 is quieter than I expected * R3 case is fantastic - cable management, sound proofing, looks good, runs cool with 1 ...

Re: Fractal Design Define R3 - fan placement?
I thought I may as well leave the front fan in the case, even if I only use it on really hot days when the F3 is spinning up a storm. The sound deadening in the case removes a lots of high frequency noise from the CPU fan, which I can hear if I open the front door and put my ear against it. Then onl...

Re: Fractal Design Define R3 - fan placement?
Well... after 2 days of testing, it seems that I'm going to be able to get away with a slow spinning exhaust fan and a slow CPU fan. I'm almost disappointed that it was this simple, and that I won't get to use more of the R3's fan positioning options :P REAR EXHAUST: Included Fractal Design fan, on ...

Fractal Design Define R3 - fan placement?
I've just received all the bits for my new PC, and am planning on building it tomorrow. Does anyone with an R3 have any suggestions for fan placement? Unfortunately Nexus PSUs are pretty much impossible to get in Australia, and all the other (381 to 650W) PSUs on the Editor's Choice list are getting back up into the price bracket of the Seasonic X-460. I still haven't placed my order :? as I'm not entirely sure about the RAM. The Gigabyte QVL doesn't have a lot listed on it. Ideally I'd like 8GB (2 sticks of 1333 4GB, leaving 2 slots free), but there isn't any 4GB 1333 RAM listed on the Gigabyte QVL. And from what I've read, I'm just as likely to ...

Re: Starting from scratch - new i5 build, opinions please
Approximately 12 hours to go until I place my order. One last niggling item is the CPU heatsink. The Mugen 2 is tempting, but I think it's overkill, and is a bit expensive. I've narrowed it down to: Hyper 212 Plus + Nexus Real Silent PWM 120mm : inexpensive and small, easy to mount. Scythe Yasya : o...

I won't be suspending the 3.5" drives, they'll just go in the 3.5" bays.

What kind of use is that Delta 66 going to see? Not a lot. It was my main card in an old DAW, but it's now just running into my home hifi. If it doesn't work, I can live without it. I might suggest the Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2, simply because it's been confirmed working with Delta series M-Audio cards....

you're buying (very) expensive components but you want to avoid SSDs? You're afraid you won't be able to force yourself to buy cheap ones instead of splurging for a ridiculously expensive model? JamieG above has it in one. I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to say. I'm not avoiding SSDs. ...
