Anyone have good results with P4 2.8C?

I'm thinking of upgrading from a 1.8A (50 watts of heat) to a 2.8C (70 watts of heat). I currently use a SLK-900 with a 92mm Panaflo L running at 12 volts. This is cool and quiet enough for me with my 1.8. I can hear it, but I don't mind it, I idle at about 36C and load at about 42-44C. Case is a fu...

Does anyone have a 9600XT? Question plz

Does anyone have an Ati-branded 9600XT? (As in not Sapphire, H.I.S, or others). I was wondering how quiet these are. I currently have an Abit Ti4200 with a stock cooler which is more than quiet enough for me. I am wondering if the 9600XT's fan is comparable to the 4200, or if anyone could speak for ...

Has anyone used the MSI FX5700 Ultra-TD128?

This card appears to be the nVidia FX5700 Ultra with something called TOP Tech cooling. TOP Tech is MSI's high end cooling solution that's supposed to run both cold and quiet. The only dB numbers I could get came from the older 4200/4800 series of cards, where they were 28 dB at 11.7 volts. Not bad ...

Re: How are Dell's so quiet??

i am surprized by the lack of thermal goop you had discovered. do he heatsinks themselves have some sort of thermal transfer tape or anything else to even out scratches? or are the heatsinks lapped to mirror shine? No goop, no tape, nothing. Just an aluminum cube that clicks into a plastic bracket ...

Re: How are Dell's so quiet??

According to Intel, as long as the CPU stays under 70°C or so, everything is fine. I've heard this too. But I've also heard that what you see reported from your mobo isn't anywhere close to accurate, that there can be huge differences between the surface of the CPU and the core. So then the questio...

We are using the mid size desktop towers as well, and they do have the green ducting. But there is definitely no thermal paste, and not just on one either, but any of them. I've already had one user who had a thermal event shut down problem because his heatsink wasn't flush against the CPU. I've che...

How are Dell's so quiet??

We use GX260's and GX270's at my work. They are nearly silent, some are completely silent as far as I can tell. When I open them up, they have one single exhaust fan and a dinky little aluminum heat sink with NO thermal grease. They are 2.26 or 2.4Ghz CPU's. How are these things not overheating? My ...

Has anyone used the N5900?

The N5900 is pretty darn fast, and the "N" version from MSI has the "twin-flow" fans which they claim is only 26dB. One of the reviewing websites said they couldn't hear this over their 3Ghz P4 cooler, but failed to mention if they were talking about a stock P4 cooler or some massive OC heatsink/fan...

What silent computer will play Doom III?

Some of you have probably seen the thread about Prescott giving 100 watts of heat. Prescott is out of the running. I currently run a pretty silent 1.8Ghz P4 in a Sonata and I am very happy (except with my hard drive, but that's another story). I'm looking at the games of the future though and I'm pr...

When Crusoe came out, one of the applications frequently mentioned were "Server blades", where instead of a big hunking Xeon desktop, there would be 4-5 Crusoe chips set up in SMP, doing the same work for much less power, size, and heat. Of course today I don't see Crusoe anywhere. The same thing wa...

I guess you're right... Both nature and technology always find a way... Unfortuantely technology has already found a way: lots of big, high speed fans. Those Pentium 1's 8 watts may have raised eyebrows back then, but they sure were a lot quieter than my last P-III box. A pentium 1 with today's HSF...

Take your govt speak elseware please :) Even if it was 90W, I'd still post it. My main point though was the 100W figure is what was quoted for the 3.6Ghz model, which is on the lower end of Prescott's lifespan. I can't read Japanese, but it looks like chips beyond Prescott will run even hotter. I pr...

Guess I'm not getting a Prescott.. 100W heat!

According to: http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/display/20030725155324.html I thought that with the new .9 micron process, Prescott would be my next silent PC CPU. That logic was due to how cool the .18->.13 process made Northwood P4's. However, even at 3.6Ghz, Prescott will dissappate 100W of heat. ...

I have a very similar set up to yours, except I have a 1.8Ghz Northwood instead of a 2.4. I'm using the same Sonata, SLK-900U, and L1A fan. My silent computer is in a very tight spot and working with it is a major pain as a result. I think I am hearing some bearing whine from my hard drive but I'm not sure. Thanks, I have heard about ASIII taking a while to get full effect, I'll keep an eye on that.

My room varies a lot, but on average I'd say it's around 75-80F, not sure what that is in C. My house does have A/C, but it is very weak by the time it gets upstairs. At night, my room drops to about 70-72F.

First Silent PC not exactly successful

I recently finished my first silent PC. It is much quieter than my last computer, no doubt, but it is not up to my expectations. For one, at idle I am seeting temps of CPU 37C Case 31C. The only load I've really thrown at it was 3DMark2001, which took temps to 41C/35C. I did get a nice 9366 marks th...

Just finished my first silent PC. I made a few mistakes that I'll get to later. For now, here are the results. I have a clear pastic tape on the bottom of my SLK-900U that says "remove before installing". Fair enough. But is this a device that keeps the bottom of the heat sink pure, or do I have to clean it? I removed the tape and it sounded like it was glued on. Is the bottom of my heat sink "pure" or shoul...
