Good to hear another fanless 8500 experience (retail too). I also don't wnat to spend the big bucks on a ZM80A (the A version is upcoming and is designed for cards without heatsink mounting holes). Big bucks? The price-difference between the two is measly 15 dollars, give or take. For that $1...

Your 1 Ghz Pentium-3 CPU have a max heat-dissipation of around 28-30W according to http://users.erols.com/chare/elec.htm Compare that with my relatively modest XP-1700 that nevertheless dissipates between 57-64W. Nearly twice the heat that must be taken care of. Nevertheless I get away with a Swifte...

Sorry, don't agree. I've had no problems with the ZM-CU17 and Radeon 8500, in fact i'm using it as i write this EMail. I'm no gamer, but the 8500LE without doubt DOESN'T produce anywhere as much heat as an NVidia 4400 or 4600, so it shouldn't be a problem !!! Regardless; there is no reason whatsoev...

Cool! That's great to know. I like my radeon 8500LE card and wouldn't want to change it. Now I can get me a ZM17CU, they're not even especially expensive, and be one more step closer towards the silent solution we're all urging for. For God sake! DONT use the clumsy ZM17CU together with your Radeon...

I came up with something better: I took a 60cl thin plastic bottle and cut it about 1/3 from the opening. Then I put this dome in place temporarily with a rubberband. The air now comes out through the tap. This muffles the turbulance quite noticeably.

Trying to compare temps of his system vs yours is really just a matter of yik-yak, fun & curious but not conclusive in the least unless you have absolutely identical conditions & setup. Raider's setup could be reading the diode, for example, while Ralf63's is working off the in-socket thermistor, a...

Start out with this simple test: Temporarily cover the PSU-fan outblow with your hand. Some noise created by air-turbulence gets muffled. Get yourself a nice fan dust-filter cover - take out the foam-rubber filter and tape it like a flapdoor over the PSU outblow. You get a similar but weaker effect ...

I cool my own XP-1700 with a Swiftech MCXC370 together with a puny 60mm-3000rpm-18CFM fan. In my Antec SX830 case with 5 x Panaflo case-fans at 7V, it translates...

I read the same newspost a while ago that quokked did, and while I don't remember exactly if they were talking about all video cards, or the 9700 in particular; they did say that you should put ridiculous amounts of thermal goop on. Read the official Zalman statement again: "Radeon 9700 Pro chipset...

I've heard that you have to put a lot of the thermal goop in between the block and the gpu, is that correct? No, not more then usual together with a Geforce-4 TI-card or below or a Radeon 8500-card or below. However, one obviously must apply it also between the heatpipe and all aluminium-slabs on b...

Subjective statements about quietness can sometimes bee very misleading. Especially if the reviewer really only cares about overclocking and maximal performance anyway. One reviewer stated for example that the original blowdryer fan on the Creative Geforce-4 TI-4600 card was "quiet". Everything is r...

Noise hidden behind noise - neverending quest for silence

I think I have been bitten by the PC-silence bug. Its not quite as common as the extreme overclockers bug, but the symptoms are similar: a quest for more silence (or speed) that almost becomes a neverending one. My system i as follow: Case: Antec SX830 Case-fans: 5 x Panaflo FBA08A12L PSU: Antec Tru...

absolutely, those components won't draw more than ~100W at full load. Take a look at the psu-reviews here at Silent PC Review. MikeC is using a Watt meter and measures the current draw of a 2Ghz P4 system with similar components and the max power usage doestn't exceed 100W by much. Both AMD:s and I...

I dont understand why you guys always insist on avoiding above 300W PSU:s. Why is that? Its always a better idea to buy a PSU with some overcapacity. The strain on the PSU is less, and it can supply your system with more stable current at lesser noise-levels. Finally: if your system demands exactly ...

Riskfree to underclock a T-breed XP2400

The new upcomming T-breed XP2400 (version B) seems to be ar least as hot as an Palomino XP1800, but with a much smaller core. Not so good seen from a quiet cooling perspective. Is it problemfree/riskfree to deliberately underclock such a XP2400 processor to, let say XP2000 speedlevels. The big idea ...

Its always a good idea to deliberately buy an overdimensioned PSU. My old 300W PSU probably worked about 85-90% of its maximal capacity, which meant that its fan worked att full speed almost from the begining. Lots of strain & noise.
