I can't help you in finding a mobo but I can deter you. I bought one over the christmas break so it could be used as a HTPC. It sounded like a turbine! The amount of modding I would have had to do to make the thing anywhere near as quiet as I would find acceptable was just not worth it. So I sold it...

You will not be able to get away with running it fanless without underclocking the chip. I have an undervolted 80mm fan blowing across the unit.

Hi Rook,

I have done this mod on both a radeon 9100 (8500) and a GF4ti4200. Both work without any problems. I don't see a GF2 drawing significantly more power that the GF4 so it should work ok. Just make sure that the HS bottom surface is not too small in comparison to the GPU chip size.

You're right that the fan is not an ideal resistor. It's actually closer to an non-ideal inductor. Of course, it's inductance characteristics are put aside as they don't actually have an effect on a DC circuit. However, it is this inductance that drives the need for additional start up current to ov...

Rory, you hit the mark. I didn't even see it that way. Man, it's been a while since I thought about a speaker enclosure but a bandpass enclosue would make a perfect design for muffling soundwaves coming out of a fan.

I don't think friction could be used to accomplish this as it would be difficult to repeat/maintain. The speed control system is probably like any other brushless DC motor. Motors use a opposing coil to ensure that, once the expected speed is acheived, the additional magnetic force required to incre...

digikey.ca has them listed for $14.80 a peice. You have to buy at least $35 worth of stuff to waive $6.50 handling charge.

In the search box, type "FBA Fan".

Good luck,

Will, Thanks for pointing that out. I reread scalar's post and I see what he meant when he said "system". That brings up another issue: has anyone blown their power supply by implementing the mod? Mike, Although the pulses inherrently introduce noise into the fan, I believe there are fixes for that ...

Hi scalar, Long time listener, first-time caller. You bring up some excellent points in your post. Your absolutely right that undervolting is not the optimal method for decreasing the speed of a fan. However, there are a few things to keep in mind. Panaflo fans, as an example, are rated for operatio...
