Hehe, I was using that same chart, but a different comparison: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/graphics/charts.html?modelx=33&model1=707&model2=712&chart=318 I think you're right, most newer games will keep increasing that difference, however I'll mostly be gaming strategy/rpg (Medieval II: TW, NWN2 (...

In my Antec Solo case with a single Scythe SFF21D 800rpm exhaust fan 45% 8800GTS fan speed wasn't quite enough to control idle temperature. :( If you had more airflow then it might work though. :) It might work, eh? I'll have at least one nexus sucking fresh air in the front, so yeah. Might work. B...

do you live in some kinda padded room to have ambient noise lower than the GTS? :P  Not really, mate - just in a relatively quiet part of town. I'm thinking it doesn't take much to rise above that noise level...for instance I can clearly hear my P120 spinning in its usb enclosure from several ...

Thanks for you informative answer, WR3034. That was exactly the kind of information I was looking for. :) And thanks for the link, but I've waded through all that already. Seems all it boils down to is whether I'll be able to stand that extra noise to get the performance boost. Hmm. And fitti...

Cool! :D But...you really hear no difference? I'll be using it in a really silent rig where my noisiest component (besides the 8800gts) will probably be the Corsair 520HX, so I'm thinking I'll be able to appreciate every single drop in noise that I can get...maybe the 8800gts isn't for me after all....

How slow can you set the 8800gts fan to spin?
Yeah...that's about what I wanna know. I've seen several people post that they're running their fan at 59% or 60% by adjusting in rivatuner or the likes. But is it possible to set it lower, to like 20-30%? I realize that'd make temps go way up, but can it be done at all?[/list]

vertically as in the fan attached to your heatsink is facing the rear exhaust fan (the fans are parallel)...This would make the longer side of you heatsink going vertically - its the standard push-pull setup Oh, well if you plan on heavy overclocking that CPU, i'd just get either a zalman vf-900 or...

What you could try though, since you have the Thermalright Ultra 120, is mount that on your CPU with the fan pointing up to the PSU, so that the fan is between the GPU heatsink and your Ultra-120. It might be able to draw some air near the GPU heatsink (and heat off it), then go pass through your C...

As for the silent hard drive enclosure...is it a bay drive? or give us a link to what it is...since there are several types Yes, it's a bay drive similar to the Scythe QuietDrive...I've got two of them lying around and I like the way they muffle high pitched whine. Don't really mind the heat since ...

Any thoughts on these components?
Hey folks! I sold my old rig about a year ago, and since then I've just been using my little MacBook. Getting sick of it now, mainly because of the small screen and measly graphics. So instead I'm about to build myself a silent budget beast. I'll be dual-booting Windows and MacOS X, which mean...

Well, it's been a while since I was into the whole macification thingy (I now own a MacBook), but the best pack out there probably is flyakite's total conversion kit, which you can find here: http://www.osx-e.com/downloads/misc/flyakite_osx.html . And if you're only after the icon packs, I'm ...

Yeah, these little boxes sure can work wonders. I'm running OpenWRT on my Asus WL-500G Premium, and doing so I've not only got a wireless printer server, storage server (printer and hdd attached via USB); I'm also using it as a homebrew version of Apples Airport Express which streams music wirelessl...

the only thing more "powerful" would be cutting power to the drive when you don't want anything accessing it. :) Well, was just a thought anyway...=) if you mean your system drive, don't even bother trying to get that to stay asleep. Nopes, I don't mean my system drive. From my understanding ...

But this is ridiculous, isn't it? I recently bought a new drive and have begun experementing with this myself - withouth coming up with any good solution. But the thing is; laptops with windows have the ability to spin down the drive just fine - no unnecessary accessing going on. Right? So why can't...

AAAH, just installed my wonderful new hdd! It's a Nidec! And it's manufactured in 2004.6 (ordered from komplett.se). There's a faint whine if I hold to my ear, but when it's in the case with the door closed, it's dead silent. I love it! And it's much more snappy than my screaming old pair of GXP120'...

SP80 rocks in HDD performance round-up!
So I went along and ordered an SP80 the other day, despite the turmoil surrounding their quietness/non-quietness. I did this thinking I'd sacrifice some performance to (hopefully) gain silence. Therefore, when I came across this huge hdd-shootout at X-bit labs today, I was pleasantly surprised to se...

Things like these severely impair the coolin...

That particular motherboard doesn´t support dualchannel memory anyway, so in this case it doesn´t realy matter:) A single stick could even be alittle faster... Unless you're calling ASUS liars, i'd say that the a7n8x-vm motherboard supports dualchannel. :D Take a look at http://www.asus.com/product...

Are two quiet drives quieter than two dampened loud ones? =)
Well, the topic basically says it all; I've currently got two IBM 120GXP's in two SilentDrives, and so far - despite all the stir around the SilentDrives - my drives have been running at acceptable temperatures. However, I recently took quieting my machine to the next level (:-)), by removing one of...
