Opteron
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet but the CrystalCPUID software works fine with Opteron chips (maybe it didnt at the time of review?) I am using it to cut my Opteron to 1.0Ghz and 1.2v at idle.

SMART temp readings through PCI SATA card?
I've got a couple 400GB Seagate drives hooked up to a Highpoint RocketRAID 1520 PCI SATA card, I would like to monitor the drive temps but none of the programs I have tried can see these drives, they see the two SATA drives that are on the motherboard headers fine. Anyone know a way to get a reading...

Passive Cooling Sempron
Maybe this is a known thing and maybe I'm just a little slow but I wanted to pass along an experience building a system for a friend (3rd system this month, too many friends, or I'm getting taken advantage of again ;) ) An Asus board in a Sonata with a Sempron 2600+ chip cooled with a Zalman 7700 an...

* good airflow over HDDs (the most important component to cool) Seriously? I would focus on cooling the cpu and power supply first. Whatever, I don't care at all if my PSU runs hot, that can't damage my data and it is the easiest and cheapest component to replace if it does shorten its life. 1. PSU...

From working in PC repair for quite a few years now I can attest to the fact that fans fail, fairly commonly. It's one of the most common things we see. One thing to note is that the failure rate for fans <80mm seems exponentially higher than the failure rate for fans >80mm. I guess from spinning fa...

Sonata question
I've recently built a couple machines for friends using Antec Sonata cases and was wondering if anyone else has noticed the heat from the power supply. The exaust air is hotter than I've ever seen with any other case, much hotter than the exaust from my Antec 350w. Anyone?

My experiences with new SilenX 9DBA Fans
I picked up a couple of the new 9DBA (sure) SilenX fans the other day to see what they could do. I replaced my cpu fan (Silent Boost with stock 80mm fan) and power supply fan (stock Antec 80mm fan) with the SilenX fans. First impression, easily the quietest fans I've heard, quieter at 12v than eithe...

Another possibility
What kind of motherboard is it, temp readings can vary as much as 10c from brand to brand for the same situation, a lot of manufacturers report their temps on the cool side so it looks better to tweakers, other motherboard makers like MSI use the 'real' number reported. Don't pay too much attention ...

I'm still managing some folding while I track down the PCs I had running fah... although.... management seems to have already forgotten about it.... I said I would turn them off.... they left it up to me to do so.... likely they wouldn't know it if they saw it... On second thought maybe I'd better j...

My folding got folded, I am no more.
Well, my folding days appear to be over. The boss found out (damned nose practicum student) and was not at all pleased, cancer research or not.

Western Digital 160GB
Got a new WD160Gb drive at work and thought I'd throw out my thoughts on it. WD1600JB Drive performs fine, but as far as the only attribute we here at SPCR care about goes it's not really acceptable. It does have fluid bearings and is fairly quiet, especially compared to older ones, however it seems...

My Samsung 955 CRT at home also annoys me with noise. I've found two causes, the refresh rate and the screen brightness, the higher each is the louder the buzzing, this is especially noticable when the image is white or lightly coloured, if the screen is showing black there is almost zero noise. (I'...

If your soundcard supports Digital S/PDIF output, buy a set of Digital speakers. I've been running digital speakers for over three years now and they are completely silent at any volume, if there is no input. Good luck, CRT_Leech Really? I'm always annoyed by the general hum/buzz of speakers when n...
