Re: What Causes "snappiness" in Performance
I'm disappointed people are using the term "snappiness" as if we've all agreed on exactly what it means. Maybe the OP can explain whether this term means a perception of how much work is done over time, immediacy of UI responsiveness, some other factor(s) or a combination thereof. 2. Launching an MS...

Last night I saw the Top Gear episode where the guys have to create a VW television ad. One of the rules for creating a VW ad goes something like: don't shout at the consumer. Intelligent people prefer to be spoken to. I think if site ads are well-targeted and take this approach, they're far less an...

Most of the people I know who block ads didn't just decide to do it out of the blue. Ad blocking is a backlash against the worst examples of internet advertising. Browser ads carry with them a pretty heavy stigma among the tech community. It's unfortunate that sites like SPCR are lumped in with all ...

Connectors and sockets increasingly being keyed to prevent the "where's pin 1?" problem is helping a lot. I killed a (speedy at the time) 486 CPU once because I had it rotated in the socket on power up. There are still too many connectors on motherboards that are not keyed in any way and have tiny l...

power requirements for 8800 series under load?
Vijay's blog mentions power requirements for 8800 series cards running the GPU client: We've been told that 8800's require 600W power supplies, but we're finding that even a little bigger (eg at least 650W) is important to leave some room for error. We are working to see if there is some way to det...

An important point to bear in mind here is that this is a new architecture. That's the important part for Intel. This is their answer to hypertransport and the killer lead AMD has had over them in multi-socket bandwidth intensive applications. To review the new platform as a desktop replacement take...

I ended up removing the stock fan and hanging a 92mm Panaflo from the stock heatsink's fins using small plastic zip ties. This has the added bonus that the HD that sits on sorbothane strips on the bottom of the case gets better airflow from the 92mm fan suspended a couple of inches above it. Now if ...

This is a big deal. I know the ATI folks have had GPU2 for a while, but I'm really happy to finally be able to use it myself (I only run NVIDIA.) You'll need CUDA drivers from http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_get.html or the leaked beta 177 driver and a modified INF file ( http://foldingforum.org/v...

The market should welcome the arrival of the Quantum Bigfoot^W^W WD GP drives. I've been lamenting the loss of lower power, slower drives since the Bigfoot went away. Slower storage started reappearing as second and third tier storage for datacenters, so it was only a matter of time til we go...

For the specific uses cited, I wouldn't go with either of the processors you're looking at. A midrange C2D should be plenty for gaming IMO, especially if you're pushing 1600x1200 or higher resolution with AA/AF/etc. where the GPU begins to be a limiting factor. I'm pining for a quad core, but only b...

Water has a MUCH higher heat capacity than air. So putting a bunch of water bottles in the fridge and freezer (leave the tops open in the freezer so the bottles don't break when it turns to ice) will help keep them cold with less energy (and less frequent compressor cycles). I don't know if anyone ...

A die-shrink and faster clocks with lower power consumption than faster cards? Smells a lot like my 6800GS, which cools nicely with a Zalman VF700-Cu. This should have been called 8800GS. 1. The Geforce 8000 series doesn't support xvmc according to this thread. Not that it matters a great deal to CPU usage, but I would think you could lessen the heat in the case by going with an older card and get xvmc in the bargain.

Why mess with water cooling? Because you've wandered from the sweet spot. The sweet spot used to be all about price / performance. Now it includes power consumption, which for SPCR purposes means heat dissipation. Wander too far up the performance ramp, and you leave behind the reasonable prices and...

An SATA cable got pushed against the fan on my VF-700Cu a few days ago, and the system ran that way for almost a day. The only moving parts in the system are the Samsung, the PSU fan, and a 120mm fan at ~1400rpm, so I don't think the beating is caused by resonance with anything else, just the drive itself. The case panel "above" the motherboard seems to be where the noise is coming from, and can be mostly damped i...
