Well now we're getting somewhere. Knowledgeable critique rather than just reaction.

You can Google "japan biz cast 2010.07.14" and get links to torrents. (I had been looking for articles about the speakers, not for the show.)

Here's a little blurb from the Web site of the show:

Not to belabor this, but: People here know that if you attach a hard drive to a heavy steel case it results in less audible vibration than if you used a rickety aluminum case, but more than if you suspended it with elastic or placed it on soft foam. I would imagine that it's always been assumed that...

I've been suitably impressed by the nonsense of using special power cords, $100 speaker cables, double posting (is that what they call it?) and the like, but this seems to make sense.

If it is true, I can also see that it's something that a lot of people would not like one bit.

Rolled-up rug speaker enclosure

Amazingly, I couldn't get a single reference to a relevant Web page when doing a number of searches for this. I only saw it on a video at a restricted site I can't link to: Somebody in Japan discovered that by putting a high quality speaker atop a rolled-up carpet runner, the speaker sounded better ...

To put it simply, under the presumed usual conditions, two identical noise sources would produce a sound that was approximately 3dB louder than just one. So two of your 15dBA fans would be about 18dBA. Add a third and it would be about 20dBA; a fourth, about 21dBA.

The World's Most Dangerous Person

I visited the website of the TV program "60 Minutes". (I wanted to check out a segment on the easy-to-behold Penelope Cruz.) On the front page there was a poll "Who is the most dangerous person in the world?" The way this was executed was infuriating, because there were only four choices: Osama bin ...

Here in Massachusetts we pronounce the English place names just like they do in England ....... except that we mangle it.

For instance, Worcester is pronounced Wuss-ter instead of Wor-ses-ter, but most of the locals pronounce it Wista.

The issue of having the phrase "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance is less important than the fact that the Pledge is recited at all, by schoolchildren, for whom it is compulsory. When they get to be adults they can decide who or what they want to pledge their allegiance to. If it all seems harm...

I'm one of those who find the flash ads either innocuous or mildly entertaining. Perhaps it's because I like the companies that run the ads -- Antec, Corsair, etc. Aren't those ads generated differently than, say, the Amazon ads? Don't they come from SPCR's servers, while the others are third party?
