9, the number for endings

I read a few articles about Microsoft calling its new Windows release "Windows 10" rather than Windows 9. Nobody mentioned what is probably the reason, and, although in the grand scheme of things it is hardly of earth-shattering importance, the fact that it wasn't mentioned makes me feel like I have...

Re: New cooling by submergence strategy

Now that I've done just a little research it is easy to learn that cooling computers with liquid dielectrics is nothing new. What's new with this is perhaps the use of this particular agent (Novec 1230) which is said to be astonishingly environmentally friendly. Novec 1230 is dispensed as a liquid b...

New cooling by submergence strategy

Intel and SGI trial submerging servers in liquid to cool them Intel and SGI have been trialing a new method of cooling servers and supercomputers that involves submerging them completely in liquid. This cooling solution doesn't rely on water though, as its properties would damage components, instea...

Re: Do cell phone calls really have to sound so bad?

But then there's the the lag, the latency in digital voice. Is there any way to get rid of that? It seems to me from my limited knowledge that whereas analog is transmitted like a railroad train, with each car (and window in each car) following each other in real time, a digital transmission is sent...

I think you're absolutely right.

The first quoted statement is pure ignorance, and pretentious.

The second statement can be forgiven if he's not at all familiar with this website, but it's just as pretentious.

Does using a good quality headset help any?

I imagine that, once the voice quality does improve, you'd need to use a headset to really take advantage of it.

Do cell phone calls really have to sound so bad?

I was the last person in the world to get a cell phone. They are wonderful for traveling or emergencies, but if the truth be told they are a bane as well. One thing I don't like about them is the terrible sound quality of calls made from such devices, even (in my experience) those made from a high e...

It appears that Logitech keyboards are available in Scandinavia. If that is the case, try the Logitech Illuminated Ultrathin Keyboard (corded). It's even quieter than the UltraX. More features, higher price.

Re: Cold fusion ressurected?

If this device is for real, it's not going to change the world greatly all that fast, because that's not the way things work. The total effect that any invention has had on the world is not just a function of what percentage of the populace has come to adopt it, but also simply of how much time it's...

Re: Cold fusion ressurected?

How does nickel = nuclear bomb? the goal of fusion is taking stable elements and combining them into other stable elements, and extracting energy from that process. the goal of fission is taking inherently unstable elements and doing a controlled split on them. neither one will produce a bomb. Re: Best noise-canceling headphones?

Noise cancelling is a good concept but in reality, it doesn't work. Most of these headphones are equipped an inaccurate microphone to pickup the ambient noise which does more harm than good. I recommend getting a closed back monitoring headphone if you need a really good isolation. Beyerdynamic DT ...

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. This kind of invention could be broadly welcomed.

The holes in the window, indispensable in having the noise-cancelling effect, look to me like a liability in most cases (except in the summer, of course.)

On a personal note, this is something that is far more alarming that is happening to my schools (and probably yours as well) - the dilution of your national identity is far more serious than a Yoga class at school, and very few people have the balls to even discuss such an issue. http://www.telegra...

One school I went to started offering yoga for PE lessons. They already offered dance so it's not a huge jump but it's not a sport so isn't exercise in the traditional sense. The more the hand of man is present in creating something, the more the hand of man has to be there to maintain it. The forces of nature as a whole will maintain a forest, but they won't maintain your car. GM organisms are far more vulnerable and require more human effort to maintain. In most cases...

Around 1990 I read about an early experiment with GM crops that had been begun ten years prior. A variety of crops were used. For each type of crop, one field of non-hybridized "wild" seeds was planted. In the same location, one field of conventional hybridized seeds was planted. A third field, with...

These are 1990s figures, but one can assume that they haven't changed in any profound way -- 70% of all the grain grown in the U.S. (and I think that figure also includes legumes) is used to feed livestock. Worldwide the figure is 30%. Add to that now the grain that's used to produce ethanol. Consid...

By the way, the program f.lux has been a considerable help ...

Ergonomics LED vs. CCFL?

Maybe I don't get around much anymore, but I've never used an LED backlit monitor. At the same time, the CCFL backlit monitors have become (to me) increasingly oppressive on the eyes. Doing Web searches I've not been able to get any information as to whether or not the LED backlights are more gentle...
